I’ll probably get dogs abuse for this (you’d be wrong) but here goes.
I was asked yesterday why I bet a 3/1 shot Eachway (American Mike) and just gave a bland response that it was ‘massive value’.
Will try to explain why on this thread 🧵
Punters, erroneously, have a belief that you shouldn’t bet anything below 5/1 eachway (when terms are 1/5 odds) because if the selection Places you make a loss on your bet.
Saw Seb Sanders say similar to @MCYeeehaaa recently.
This is not the way to approach eachway betting.
You need to think of eachway bets as two separate bets. One to win, one to place. Sounds simple. Don’t be swayed by a desire to ‘at least get your money back if you place’. That’s not logically sound.
Here’s where, if you don’t get it, you’ll get a good laugh out of me …
I’d bet an odds-on shot eachway in the right circumstances.
Why? Because it’s two bets. One to win, one to place. And if I see value on both sides of the bet why wouldn’t I?
Take this as an example …
There is a football tournament.
8 teams, 2 groups of 4. Winner of each group meets in the final.
*Prices* 4/5 Italy 5/4 England
10,000 (x6) 6 Sunday League Pub teams.
*EW Terms 1/3,2*
Italy in Group A, England in Group B.
Why wouldn’t you bet Italy & England both eachway?
You’d take 1/50 Italy and 1/33 England to make the Final in this scenario.
So you should bet them both eachway also as you’re getting a much bigger price to make the Final as part of your eachway bet.
I’ve probably explained this poorly.
But hopefully you get the jist.

PUNCHESTOWN (Wed 27 Apr)
Subheading: As bad as it gets
We’ve only stood on course about 50 times so far. Yesterday was our most profitable day on the track. Today was our 2nd worst and we are now level on the week.
Let the fun begin …
15:40 - Life In The Park ISP 9/2 was a full point bigger on our board at the off and we laid a decent bet to lose 4-figs @ 7/1 to start the day off nicely 😡
A bet of €700 Thanksforthehelp @ 5/1 (ISP 7/2) was also struck.
16:15 - If you don’t laugh you’ll cry. We had 3 losers in the book here.

Barely a bean laid on the just denied Rebel Ivy (beaten a head).
PUNCHESTOWN (Tue 26 Apr)
Subheading: Small crowd, one horse day
15:40 - Party Central laid @ 3/1 and 11/4. Places fine. Race must have been bet to 102% in the ring. Come racing.
16:15 - The Industry SP is an absolute joke at the best of times but even I can’t slag the ISP of 20/1 Mighty Potter. Not sure how they’ve returned it that. First good value price off-course I’ve seen in years. Fairs fair. Mighty Potter was our biggest loser but not for much.
16:50 - Small turnover race despite the 17 runners. Good old Betfair took an age to remove the non-runner on the show. God bless Cluj. Result was fine. Think we won a monkey. No punters here so far.
