I see some fans where apparently doing the 10 German bombers last night- I see they didn't do any research on Leipzig. It was a target of a few raids during the war. I'll highlight December 3-4 1943. 527 aircraft took off for this raid. 307 Lancaster 220 Halifaxs 1/ #leipzig43
Lancaster flew at 23000 feet Halifaxs 17000 feet. Route was towards Berlin with a faint heading towards the capital in an attempt to tie up enemy aircraft, which appeared to be successful. The raid of #Leipzig was deemed the most successful of #Leipzig of the war. #Leipzig43
This was due to the Pathfinders who found & marked the target area successfully. 30% of #Leipzig lay in ruins. Main railway station & both gas works were severally damaged. Also hit was the 1936 world fair site which had been converted to mainly assemble Junkers 3/ #Leipzig43
Aircraft. A total of 24 aircraft where lost that night. 9 Lancaster and 15 Halifax's. The 4.6% of the force which may seem high but was within acceptable levels at the time. A total of 120 servicemen 50 in Lancaster and 70 in Halifaxs died. 4/ #leipzig43
A very high civilians casualties reported.
Why the thread I'll highlight 1 Halifax HR732. Took of Snaith in Yorkshire 00.09 with its crew of 8. #Leipzig43 5/
Capt A.J. Savage
Flight engineer WWB Hamilton
Navigator FJ Baker
Bomb Aimer IG Davies
Wireless Op M Hampson
Air Gunner RJ Edwards
Air Gunner DW Milliken
Lost without trace 6/
In that crew was my nans only sibling. To this day after a bit of research very little is known apart from it was likely hit over or near #Leipzig43. 7/
The pilots remains seemed to have been found but lost again the time the pilots wife recd a ring & returned the paper work. Given how things were in & around #Leipzig just after the war with it being in the Russia sector its not a surprise. #Leipzig43 8/
Allies moved Pows & bodies ASAP so they weren't behind "Russian" lines. So if your the type of person who sings 10 German bonbers do some research first and hsve some self awareness. #Leipzig43 end
