For perspective: My current rate for a weekend event is $5,000. That is actually very low for professional speakers.
Quakers want all of this work for free or $200 (an actual amount a YM offered me).
You know who we get when we don't pay speakers, #Quakers?
Amateurs, zealots, and advertisers (people who work for a Quaker org that is underwriting the cost).
And #Quakers often treat their speakers badly! It's a lose-lose situation.
My current rates are listed on my website. These are not set in stone, but they help to screen out groups that want me to work for free. ashleymwilcox.com/rates
And honestly, I have unofficial Quaker rates, because #Quakers tend to want to pay so much less than other denominations. 🙁

Another thing I have been thinking about a lot lately is how *expensive* it is for #Quakers to have volunteers do everything.
Taking into account all of the time, effort, and having to fix things that volunteers do badly, it would be *so much cheaper* to just pay a professional.
And that's not even factoring in everything we lose by having terrible outward-facing media (websites, social media, you name it).
This volunteer shabby-chic is not a good look, Friends!
Do #Quakers actually want young people to come to meeting? This is not the way to do it!
Friends love to point to things like @QuakerSpeak. Guess what? That was funded!
The first set of numbers is if the YM just wants to pay for *content*. If they want an address, meetings with children and youth, and two interest groups, at very low rates, the honorarium would come to $1,150.
The second set of numbers is *time*. If the YM wants the person to spend 10 hours planning, 10 hours traveling, and 72 hours at the event, and agrees to pay $25/hour, the honorarium for time is $2,300.
#Quakers, we're getting close to Yearly Meeting time! It has come to my attention that some YMs do not pay honoraria for speakers.
That's a problem! Here are some things to consider when setting your honoraria for YM speakers:
First, travel, registration, and room and board at the session are a cost for the yearly meeting, but they are not a benefit for the speaker.
If the YM wants someone to come in person for the annual session, this is the minimum the yearly meeting has to pay to make that possible. But going to the YM is not a benefit for the speaker. That is a working trip, and the travel and time there are all part of the work...
