'Education experts have condemned the “scandalous” state of reading education in Scotland’s schools after a mother told how teachers pushed her son to the brink of suicide by overlooking his dyslexia.'
/ Yesterday, Gillian Evans told a @reformscotland webinar that her son was failed by an “ineffective” reading programme used by around half of Scotland’s councils. And that teachers do not have sufficient research knowledge to implement the best approaches to reading.
/ @KenBMuir agreed there must be more national co-ordination around methods that work. Apparently saying 'there is currently “a big gap” between what is taught in Scotland’s schools & academic studies on what works, partly because teachers don’t have time to read the research.'
/ Meanwhile, the day before, the @SP_ECYP @kaukabstewart committee CLOSED petition 'PE01668: Improving literacy standards in schools through research-informed reading instruction' which called for teachers to be given guidance, support & training in the latest reading research.
/ Last year at SLF Online during @S_A_Somerville's Keynote Address, @GayleGgorman said 'many, many of our practitioners feel really under-skilled and have a lack of confidence in developing and supporting, particularly our youngest children as you said, with reading'. More 👇
/ Is there any, ANY joined up thinking going on AT ALL? I wrote to Ken Muir SEVEN YEARS ago. The petition was lodged FIVE YEARS ago. Children in Scotland are being left behind because of our failure to act on the research. We have KNOWN about this problem for YEARS. #THEEND
