📢The Michigan House and Senate are two of our top priorities for the 2022 election cycle📢 Both chambers will be extremely competitive: we only need to flip 3 seats in the House and 4 seats in the Senate to win a Democratic #PathToMajority 🧵
We’re already in a strong position, fielding dynamic candidates in all 110 House districts and 38 Senate districts. Meanwhile, Republicans couldn’t even field a full team and are backing candidates that want to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
In fact, last week, @caglanville FLIPPED a GOP Michigan House seat that Trump won by nearly 16 points in 2020. It's the first state leg flip of the year & shows that Michigan voters are rejecting the GOP’s far-right extremism & want elected officials who put their needs first!
@caglanville We’ll also be running on the fairest maps ✨in a decade✨ Although Dems won the popular vote in the MI House in virtually every election over the last 10 years, we’ve never won a majority because of GOP gerrymandering. Now we can create a #PathToMajority and flip this chamber.
@caglanville Michigan is ground zero for Trump’s cult & the rapidly radicalizing GOP – they’re rabid for QAnon conspiracy theories, violence, & attacking our vote. In fact, Trump has only endorsed MI state leg candidates who’ve made overturning the 2020 election central to their platforms.
@caglanville Meanwhile, Michigan Democrats are focused on the issues that matter most to working families: improving our roads, lowering the costs of health care, ensuring clean water for Michiganders, and keeping good-paying jobs in the state.
@caglanville With huge budget savings, Michigan Dems want to repave roads, rebuild bridges, and upgrade water infrastructure, creating thousands of jobs. They also want to prioritize Michigan businesses that bid on state contracts, keeping tax dollars in the state to support economic growth.
@caglanville Democrats are fighting for everyday Michiganders – mom and pop small business owners, teachers, autoworkers, and students… not mega-corporations and the wealthiest 1%. Help us support the Dem state legislative candidates fighting for the people: bit.ly/399szbI

Last week, Virginia Democrats allocated billions of dollars in federal COVID relief funds from @POTUS’s American Rescue Plan, funds that Virginia Republicans wanted to reject & withhold from their own struggling constituents. Here’s where the funding went:
@POTUS 💻$700+ million to expedite the expansion of broadband infrastructure to underserved areas & close the digital divide in 3 years
📈$250 million to support struggling small businesses, reinvest in our economy, & build a better Virginia post-pandemic
@POTUS 👨‍👩‍👦$862 million to help those out of work + another $73 million to update & modernize the unemployment office’s systems
🍎$250 million to upgrade our public school infrastructure & address ventilation needs to improve air quality so our kids can focus on learning

THREAD: The GOP's filibuster of the For the People Act means the fight for voting rights is moving to the states.

Here's how state Democratic lawmakers are taking action to expand access to the ballot box:
🗳️VIRGINIA: Democrats are making it a top priority to expand voting rights. They made Election Day a holiday, allowed no-excuse absentee voting, & passed a comprehensive voting rights act—becoming the first state in the nation to have one of its own.
🗳️NEVADA: Democrats permanently expanded mail voting after a successful election administration during the pandemic.

Now, every active registered voter will receive a ballot in the mail & have the ability to authorize someone else to return their ballot.

Today we’re going to give you the full rundown on everything Arizona Republicans have done this year to make their state legislature the disgrace of the nation when it comes to undermining our democracy & fueling the spread of misinformation & conspiracies.
Almost 5 months after the election, Arizona Republicans still refused to give up on their bizarre voter fraud conspiracies. Despite a total lack of evidence, Arizona’s Senate GOP launched their own “audit” & hired a company owned by a prominent conspiracy theorist to conduct it.
Courts in Arizona had already rejected the GOP’s claims of election fraud. A previous official audit of voting machines in Maricopa County found that they were working perfectly & a limited hand recount similarly found a perfect match with the machine-generated tabulation.

Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of our new State Voting Rights Council made up of Democratic state legislators from across the country. Together, we’ll strategize on fighting GOP voter suppression & mobilize national resources to preserve #OurVoteOurVoice.
The State Voting Rights Council will be co-chaired by Nevada Assembly Speaker @JasonFrierson & Michigan Senate Democratic Leader @jimananich, & include members from Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, New York, Wisconsin, & more.
@JasonFrierson @jimananich So far this year, Republicans have introduced hundreds of bills to suppress the vote. In stark contrast, Democrats in the states have taken the lead on expanding access by implementing policies like automatic voter registration & more early voting.

We’ve noticed a disturbing trend this year of GOP state legislators across the country defending slavery (?!?!) Here’s a rundown of a few of the GOP lawmakers who hold the dubious distinction of defending slavery or related institutions this year:
Tennessee GOP Rep. Justin Lafferty ranted in defense of the deeply racist three-fifths compromise, which gave slaveholding states more power. The comments came as lawmakers debated restricting the way public schools could teach about racism & slavery.
Louisiana GOP Rep. Ray Garofalo said Louisiana schools need to teach “the good” of slavery. Deeply disturbing that elected officials with power over our children’s education would seek to minimize the horrors of slavery.

Instead of encouraging people to get vaccinated, GOP-controlled state legislatures have introduced a wave of anti-vaccination laws. Here’s a roundup of some of the most incompetent Republicans threatening our post-pandemic return to normal:
A shot of conspiracy 💉 Florida just passed a bill banning businesses, schools, & government entities from requiring proof of vaccination, bowing to extremist anti-vaxxers with new laws that could undermine our health & economic recovery.
A dose of hypocrisy 💉 A Senate amendment in Arizona would prevent private businesses from requiring vaccinations. It of course should be noted that many of the proposal's supporters are totally fine with businesses discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.
