today three cops randomly stopped me at canal st to ask me to translate for a confused asian woman they were charging for fare evasion and they kept refusing to let her go bc she didnt have an id 1/
incredibly bleak irony in seeing an increased police presence, ostensibly in response to violence towards asian women, result in police harassing an asian woman then giving her a hundred dollar fine for skipping a $2 ticket in chinatown during lol aapi month 2/
not to mention when i told the cop i thought they should leave her alone, he turned his body cam on and told me he was recording me. in summary i do not feel protected, this is a nightmare @NYCMayor 3/3
just tweeting bc i dont have the energy to write an op ed
and to clarify, i dont find any of this surprising or unexpected. i do think the city has completely and repeatedly ignored loud and clear demands from major aapi orgs saying increased policing was NOT what we wanted
and to also clarify, i am absolutely not saying i want any police to "protect" me, i want the police gone and for the city to fund social and mental health services. if my phrasing implied otherwise sorry, i am just typing this on my phone
