As much as I’ve explained a few tips on how you can write an SOP for graduate school, you should look at some information provided by schools.
Before we do that, I have a few red flags you should avoid in your essays.
‼️ RED FLAGS ‼️
- Do not emotionally blackmail the reader. They don't work anymore.
For instance, my grades were affected because I had to help my poor mum at the market.
OR
Losing my parents affected my grades drastically. Things like this do not help.
Instead of saying that, why not rephrase to: I maintained a B+ average while working in Dr. Ebuka’s lab despite having to work 30 hours a week as a
waitress to support my family.
Can you spot the difference? Don't just write anything to blackmail people. Be strategic!!!
I saw “Work It” on Netflix, and a lady had an interview at Duke University for pre-med. She kept on talking about how she has a 4.0 CGPA, volunteers thrice a week at a Nursing home, plays cello and is the student government rep.
1/n
As she was talking, I was like, and so? What effect/impact did you have as a student rep etc.?
And BOOM! The interviewer cut her short and asked, “What are you passionate about?” “What gets you out of bed in the morning?”
2/n
The interviewer said she was looking for applicants that are change-makers, risk-takers. She’s not interested in applicants that fill the box but applicants who blow the box.
This brings us to what I always ask - “WHO ARE YOU?”
3/n
Before you write your SOP, always ask yourself this - “What will the graduate admissions committee remember me for?”
The reason is simple. The committee reads tons of documents. They should remember yours at the decision table.
1/n
It all boils down to your story. Who are you? Are you the candidate who never saw a moving car until you were 18 years old? Or you’re the candidate who built a robot by using spare parts?
‼️Reminder:
Your documents are a reflection of who you are. Again, who are you?

I asked a few weeks ago, “Why should the school invest $80,000 in you?” The responses I got were funny, but I had my reason for asking.
I expected people to tell me the gap in their research and how their proposed program would enable them to address the gap.
