🧵 Let me tell you something about Mega… the encrypted version of Megaupload that I launched a year after the raid.

The US and New Zealand Govt made a deal with my co-accused. They have been running Mega. I haven’t been involved for several years.

The US and New Zealand destroyed #Megaupload in 2012 alleging massive copyright infringement.

Totally legal I may add because 99,999% of all reported infringing links were taken down by Megaupload as required by the law.

Megaupload complied with both US and NZ laws.

Me and my former partners have been fighting extradition to the United States ever since. We always knew that the US criminal case against us was a sham.

According to the latest media reports Mega now has 300 million users. That’s more than double the registered users Megaupload had.

And here’s the kicker: There’s now more copyright infringement on Mega than there ever was on Megaupload.

And it’s still perfectly legal.

The difference is that files are now encrypted during upload and Mega doesn’t know what users are uploading.

Users feel safe to use Mega for copyright infringement and as a result there’s much more of it.

Mega still takes infringing links down when reported.

BUT…

Users have gotten much smarter about how to share infringing links.

They rarely use linking sites on the open web these days. They use Telegram groups, Discord servers, Tor sites and blockchains.

It’s now much harder for copyright holders to find infringing links 🤷

Mega is doing exactly what Megaupload did but with more users and of course more copyright infringement, still perfectly legal.

The US Govt and Hollywood achieved nothing and the New Zealand Govt has embarrassed itself and wasted $30+ million of taxpayer money.

Congratulations.

The US probably offered a deal to my co-accused because the New Zealand Labour Govt didn’t want to extradite us. A face saving exercise.

Or the US no longer wants me there because I would drag the real Mega conspiracy of politicians and their Hollywood donors into Court and win.

The tragedy is that my co-accused couldn’t see the pending victory and took a deal like 98% of the accused in the US ‘justice system’.

Plea bargains are so common because the accused are too scared to take the risk of defending themselves, even when they know they’re innocent.

My co-accused will likely get 2 years of house arrest in New Zealand and forfeit over USD $20 million in assets seized by the US Govt.

Let’s see if the New Zealand Crown was able to secure some of that money to recover some of the losses NZ tax payers had with this case.

What does this mean for me?

No more extradition if that’s what I want. With this new legal twist it’s now optional for me to have my case heard in New Zealand.

I’m the last defendant who can present his case to a jury, here or there or maybe not at all.

Let’s see what happens.

Don’t worry about my co-accused. They spend most of the day glued to the screen anyway. House arrest will be easy-peasy.

The Mega shares held by the current majority owner on their behalf are worth many times the money they are forfeiting. I’d say $200+ million.

I’m not worried for several reasons. One is that Mega is doing EXACTLY what Megaupload did:

Perfectly legal hosting of mass copyright infringement.

My co-accused now agree with the US that Megaupload was an organized criminal group and I’m looking forward to the explanation 🤓

What’s more astonishing is that the US and New Zealand indirectly admitted that Megaupload was perfectly legal because they haven’t taken any action against Mega in the last 9 years, despite Mega hosting more copyright infringement than Megaupload.

A glaring admission of defeat.

Don’t worry about me. I’ve learned valuable lessons in this fight and I got really good at dealing with bullies.

The US has already lost. But the arrogant nature of US Empire won’t allow them to accept that I’ve beaten them at their own game, with both hands tied behind my back.

Instead of fighting me they should hire me to save them and their sinking pirate ship 🏴‍☠️
