I know it's not in vogue anymore, but maybe Jews still shouldn't drive German cars? This: "The Porsches have never publicly addressed the activities of their patriarchs during the Third Reich." and much much more in @davidthejong eye-opening piece. nytimes.com/2022/04/19/opi…
More: "Take the Quandts. Today, two of the family’s heirs [are worth] $38 billion, control BMW, Mini & RollsRoyce... The family’s patriarchs, Günther Quandt & his son Herbert Quandt, were [Nazis] who subjected as many as 57,500 people to forced or slave labor in their factories."
"After the war ended, the Quandts were “denazified” in a flawed legal process in postwar Germany that saw most Nazi perpetrators get away with their crimes... Today [Herbert's children] manage their fortunes in a town near Frankfurt from a building named after their grandfather."
"For another decade [after heirs commissioned a 2011 study], the website of the Herbert Quandt Media Prize featured a bio of its namesake that made no mention of his activities during the Nazi era, except for saying he joined the board of his father’s battery company in 1940."
Back to the Porsches: "In his...autobiography, Mr. Porsche gave a twisted historical account, full of antisemitic statements, about Porsche’s Jewish co-founder, Adolf Rosenberger." Truth was the fam "bought the co-founder out of the company" in 1935, obv for far less than value.
And here's a bit about the Flicks of Daimler Benz: "Friedrich Flick controlled one of Germany’s largest steel, coal and arms conglomerates during the Third Reich. In 1947 he was sentenced to seven years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity..." -->
"At his Nuremberg trial, he was found guilty of using forced and slave labor, financially supporting the SS and looting a steel factory. After his early release in 1950, he rebuilt his conglomerate and became the controlling shareholder of Daimler-Benz." Was bought out in '85. --
"Today..the Flick dynasty worth about $4 billion maintains a private foundation in Düsseldorf named after their patriarch. The foundation...is still named after a convicted Nazi war criminal in whose factories and mines 10s of thousands of people worked in forced or slave labor."
-- "including thousands of Jews. But looking at the foundation’s website, you would never learn of the Flick fortune’s tainted past."
My latest story on @Chabad is a real trip. During corona, the rabbi of Berdichev, Ukraine, decided to install heating under what was thought to be the floor of the mausoleum of the great Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev (1740-1809). Work began ... 1 chabad.org/news/article_c…
With the Berdichev Rabbi Moshe Thaler's constant supervision, workers began digging. They hit a brick wall, beautiful and very old. Rabbinic experts advised Thaler to slow down and follow the path the wall took. Soon, a tiled floor emerged. Then four horizontal gravestones 2
They cleared away the dirt and rubble and realized they had discovered the original ohel of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and his three sons. It had been hiding in plain sight for approximately 90 years 3
I have a story out on @mosaicmag this morning about Ukraine's Jews. It's best encapsulated by the subheader: Caught in the middle of Russia’s hybrid war on their country, they need serious help—and nobody is listening. mosaicmagazine.com/observation/po…
@mosaicmag It's a review of @SamuelSokol's valuable book on the Ukraine saga's impact on the country's Jews. While so much of the conversation has focused on antisemitism and geopolitics, there is a simple story to be told: the Jews of Ukraine are caught in a crisis not of their making.
@mosaicmag@SamuelSokol So much of the help Ukraine's Jews have received from their Western brethren has been rhetoric; but where's the money? Does the orphan in Zhitomir care that someone in New York says it's all Putin's fault? Or does he perhaps need a pair of shoes and a meal?
