As I am returning from my short trip to Kyiv, here's a thread about my impressions from visiting the Ukrainian capital after three months away. It feels almost normal - many people on the streets, including kids - but it's not, not yet
Many businesses have reopened, but not all of them. Public transport resumed work partially: metro trains run with intervals of 20-30 min and stop operating at 8 PM. Trains are quite crowded. Access to metro is free - but that will change on May 16
There are obviously a lot of armed people in military uniforms in the city. Documents are checked at the entrance to the main train station and at the platforms exits, but it looks rather as a formality
On a bus in Western Ukraine today, I overheard a boy, maybe 17 yo, talk about his apartment in Kharkiv's Saltivka district, completely destroyed by Russians. 'I'll never forgive them. My parents will go to Europe, I'll return to Kharkiv, join territorial defence and take revenge'
'These orcs are completely brainwashed. Their TV has been teaching them to hate Ukrainians for years', he said, speaking with a conductor in Russian language. 'Ukraine is my beloved country'. This war has alienated so many Ukrainians who were previously neutral or loyal to Russia
This is especially true for the new generation. Ukrainian children, who were hiding from the bombs in basements, who lost their loved ones, their homes, will be growing with a clear understanding that Russia is an enemy and a strong feeling of their Ukrainian identity.
I just spoke with a man who was abducted by Russians in Kherson reg and spent weeks in captivity. He was beaten, tasered, ribs broken. His main takeaway about Russians? 'They are cowards. Their main fear is to be sent to frontline: they are scared to death of the Ukrainian army'
Kherson region has been under Russian occupation for more than two months, yet, Russians fail to install an effective control over the region. They kidnap, torture, kill civilians, shoot at protesters. My source believes 90% of Kherson reg residents oppose Russian occupation
Russians have been trying to disconnect the region from internet and mobile communications in the last days. They closed almost all of the evacuation routes from Kherson region. They do not allow food and medicine supplies from Ukraine in,bringing low-quality stuff from Crimea
Guests invited to Italian talk shows in recent weeks: chief Russian propagandist Soloviov, propagandists from 🇷🇺 defense ministry Zvezda TV, 🇷🇺 foreign ministry spokeswoman, Italian combatants for 🇷🇺 proxies in Donbas.
Next: 🇷🇺 foreign minister, 'for the 1st time on European TV'
Interviews with the above-mentioned people were usually very complacent. No hard questions, no rebuke by the presenter. When Ukrainian guests are invited, they are given less space and are often interrupted. Ukrainian friends who participated in these TV shows before now refuse
Here's a recent post by a Ukrainian journalist who speaks about 'Russian propaganda on Italian TV' and explains why she doesn't want to participate in these talk shows m.facebook.com/story.php?stor…
A lot of outrage in Ukraine over Pope Francis' idea to have Ukrainian and Russian women to hold cross together at Via Crucis yesterday. Having Ukrainian Irina and Russian Albina to do it was perceived in 🇺🇦 as equating the victim and the aggressor, as the Russian invasion goes on
Ukraine's ambassador to the Vatican, as well as leaders of Latin and Ukrainian Greek Catholic church voiced disappointment with this decision, calling such an initiative 'offensive' to Ukrainians who are currently being killed by Russians, with no sign of remorse by the latter
It's too early for reconciliation initiatives, critics in Ukraine said, adding it was like inviting a rapist and his victim to hold hands before justice has been served.Comparisons to WWII were made: would it have been fair to try to reconcile Nazis and Jews during the Holocaust?
Yay! I found and bought the legendary post stamps with the Russian warship. They come in two variants, a smaller and a bigger size one (the price is different too). It's interesting that on one set it's written Glory to Ukraine, while it's Glory to Heroes on the other one
I'm getting in touch with Ukrposhta CEO and showing him all your comments to make the purchase of these stamps from abroad possible. I'll suggest they raise the price slightly and donate the money to Ukraine's armed forces
For those willing to pay a significant amount for an exclusive set signed by the author, here's an auction starting on April 22: prozorro.sale/en/poshtovi-ma…
