Day 56 of our Shanghai Covid lockdown

When it’s nice out at night, I unwind on our balcony in a rocking chair my aunt gave me when our oldest was born

It’s a full moon tonight and so quiet that you can hear the footsteps and swishing of the hazmat suits 10+ stories below
We don’t have an officially confirmed number, but we estimate that 70-80 people in our apartment community have tested positive and been taken to central quarantine over the past several weeks
It’s a relatively well-off area and, like many relatively well-off areas, a lot of people have a key status symbol in Shanghai - a pet dog, or even several pet dogs
Some of the people sent to central quarantine entrusted pet dogs to neighbors but there is also a fear that pets can spread Covid so many weren’t able to, and released the dogs into the community - possibly fearing for the safety of the dogs
We’ve always had a lot of “ownerless” cats in our community, which are usually fed by families with small children who like to take care of them or older families

Normally, they buy a lot of dry cat food and feed groups of cats late afternoon or at night
But the cat food has been harder to buy recently as the city prioritized food for people and other basic survival necessities for delivery during lockdown

At the same time, we’ve been restricted from going our of our front doors into the common areas below, where the cats are
The result is horrific

Each night, we hear hungry cats crying and fighting

Worse, we hear the hungry dogs - which is what I heard just now - catching a cat

The guttural animal sounds break the eerie silence as I sit in my rocking chair trying to forget about the day
It’s the suddenly interrupted silence that startles me

This part of Shanghai was never quiet and at all hours there were bikes, cars, planes, people, life

All happening, all the time, never silence

But now, everything is quiet

Except the terror of the starving cats and dogs

Day 53 of our Shanghai Covid lockdown

Yesterday, they announced zero new cases outside of quarantine for the first time in a long time, which was huge news

But as quickly as we were optimistic, we were set back by two new cases identified outside of quarantine today ImageImage
In my apartment community, we’ve have an increase in mandatory testing, seemingly related to some “abnormal” recent tests in some of the buildings

So we are back to daily double testing
Back to waking up to a bull horn at 8 am outside our building, which repeats the same message over and over for several minutes

The message, however, has changed recently

Before it was, “Come downstairs immediately for a PCR test” (in Chinese of course)

Day 47 of our Shanghai Covid lockdown and we woke up, like we often do, to a man in a hazmat suit downstairs yelling through a bull horn for us to come down for our tests

While checking our phones for the new test QR code, we also saw this alarming new official notice sent to us
The key points are:

1) We must stay inside our apartment and not leave our front door, except for going downstairs for testing

This was not a change for us, and it was a little strange to see it reiterated again
2) All deliveries are prohibited during the weekend (Friday midnight to Sunday midnight); nothing will be allowed in

No food
No water
Nothing

So we are encouraged to cancel all deliveries and ask for refunds because nothing that is delivered to the community gates will come in

Day 40 of my Shanghai Covid lockdown

We had seen a gradual decrease recently in new cases

But today cases went up again in Shanghai, another setback

By my count:
2% increase in new cases
10% increase in new fatalities

*There are several caveats to this link and the chart
Every day this week we have been called downstairs for a PCR test

Most neighbors have refused - we did too - and instead demand a home test

Some days, the neighborhood committee is insistent that everyone do the PCR test - usually to align with city wide testing requirements
It seems to have created a situation where going down to do PCR tests are optional (most days), or are required (days when the city-wide government requires it).

When required, we have gone down to do the tests.

We must be close to 40 consecutive negative tests at this point.

Day 36 of our Shanghai Covid lockdown

Following a moment of inspiration, we started a broth/stock group in our apartment community
People who have veggies which are nearing the time of being beyond the point you would normally use them, but which are still good, can give them instead of throwing them away
They can leave them any time before 3 pm outside our door

And we will use the good ones to make a soup broth so that they don’t go to waste

Day 35 of our Shanghai Covid lockdown

Unbelievably, the newly identified Covid cases in Shanghai increased yesterday

Adding to that trend, friends in several areas reported new cases in apartment buildings and communities that have been under strict lockdown for weeks
We have the strictest imaginable lockdown conditions in Shanghai, and still have this massive setback of a rise in new Covid cases.

How can the virus, in these conditions, continue to survive and spread?

And if it can, in these conditions, how can our hope continue to survive?
Social media in Shanghai has been flooded this weekend with despair, sorrow, and anger

Day 29 of our Shanghai Lockdown

Food and water continue to be the hot topic for everyone in the city

Where we are, deliveries continue to improve, but at a frustratingly slow rate
Yesterday, we received a delivery of salmon from an order we placed more than a week ago

It was not as much as we wanted, but we were absolutely thrilled to have it!

It was the first type of non-essential (ie, rice, potatoes, cucumbers) order we have received in a long time
We also had cabbage, and decided to make salmon tacos with coleslaw

We didn’t have any tortillas, but decided to make our own for the very first time - hubris in the time of corona

No rolling pin so we used a chopstick

(not pictured: the final product, which was a tasty mess)
