How many times have you forgotten something important?

Over the last 10 years, I've made a system to solve this. And I've taught it to 20,000 people.

It's called Building a Second Brain.

Here are 12 steps to create your own Second Brain:
1. Decide what you want to capture

Think about your Second Brain as an intimate journal.

Decide what you most want to capture, learn, explore, or share.

Identify two to three kinds of content you already value to get started with.
2. Choose your notes app

Your notes app is at the center of your Second Brain.

I recommend you choose an app based on your notetaking style since it's highly personal.

In this video, I will walk you through how to select the best one for you:
3. Choose a capture tool

I recommend you:

Get a read-later app such as @instapaper or @Pocket.

And start saving articles, quotes, and online content you’re interested in for later consumption.

This step will change the way you think about consuming content forever.
@instapaper @Pocket 4. Get set up with PARA

PARA stands for Projects; Areas; Resources; Archives.

And it's the best way to organize your digital environment for actionability.

This blog post will help you get started: fortelabs.co/blog/para/ Image
@instapaper @Pocket 5. Identify your 12 favorite problems

Make a list of your favorite problems, the questions you ask yourself all the time.

Save this list and return to it for inspiration on what content to capture and keep.
@instapaper @Pocket 6. Automatically capture your ebook highlights

Set up an integration to automatically send highlights from your reading apps (such as a read-later or ebook app) to your notes app.

Use @readwise or @IFTTT to make this easy.
@instapaper @Pocket @readwise @IFTTT 7. Practice Progressive Summarization

When reading, highlight what resonates with you.

Every time you revisit the note, add another layer of highlights to boil it down to its essence.

@instapaper @Pocket @readwise @IFTTT 8. Experiment with Intermediate Packets

Break down a project you're responsible for into smaller pieces.

Make a first pass at one of the pieces (creating an Intermediate Packet) and share it with at least one person to get feedback.
@instapaper @Pocket @readwise @IFTTT 9. Make progress on one deliverable

Choose one project and see if you can make decisive progress on it using only the notes in your Second Brain.

Use these workflow strategies to help you execute your projects more effectively: fortelabs.co/blog/just-in-t…
@instapaper @Pocket @readwise @IFTTT 10. Schedule a Weekly Review

Set a weekly reminder in your calendar to establish the habit of conducting a Weekly Review.

To start, just clear your notes inbox and decide on your priorities for the week.

There's a secret to radically improving your productivity:

It’s called a Weekly Review.

I’ve spent years testing, tweaking, and refining my Weekly Review.

The results of all these experiments is this simple, 5-point checklist:
But first...

Knowing why you are completing your Weekly Review will help you maintain and sustain the habit.

Here are 3 benefits of a Weekly Review:
• Clear your digital workspaces
• Update your available tasks
• Decide on your priorities for the week
STEP 1: Email

Clear your inbox and capture any new tasks or notes.

Don’t get sucked into the vortex of replying and taking action on each and every email.

Touch each email only once and add it to one of these four brackets. Image

I only ever touch each email once.

Here’s how I answer my emails in 17 minutes a day:

Follow my 5 steps to inbox zero (thread)
1. The Essentials

It’s easier to maintain your inbox at zero than it is to get it to zero.

Firstly, unsubscribe from every newsletter, notification, and broadcast list that isn’t absolutely essential.
2. Strip email down to its core function

Stop using emails for everything (your to-do list, file storage, etc.)

Use it only for its core function - collecting new inputs.

That means turning off any "smart" features, chat, and notifications.

A lot of things are wrong with "productivity"

And how it's presented online nowadays.

Here are 7 reasons why the productivity industry is just begging to be disrupted:
1. IT'S DRIVEN BY CLICKBAIT

The main purpose of the thousands of productivity articles published every day is to allow bored office workers to procrastinate without feeling too guilty about it.
2. IT REDUCES PRODUCTIVITY TO “TIPS AND TRICKS”

Productivity can no more be achieved by collecting productivity tips than wealth can be achieved by collecting money-saving tips.

I’m seeking to commission an experienced writer to work with me on a book summary:

1. I give you my progressively summarized notes of Free to Learn, by Peter Gray

2. You write a summary using my instructions and incorporating my edits

3. I pay you $500 with full byline
DM me with brief answers to 3 questions:

1. What is your writing experience?

2. What’s the link to your best public writing?

3. Why do you want this gig?

If this experiment is successful we may work together further
