NEW: Every child aged 3-16 in #Wales is going to be offered a free musical instrument as part of the new 'National Music Service'.

It's hoped the plan will help low-income households and those with additional learning needs.

This is the bit on tuition.

“ensure that access to music tuition is not a barrier for learners from low‐income households where
parents and carers could not afford the tuition costs”
Bit disappointed nobody’s made a School Of Rock reference and tagged @jackblack but there we go.
Some people bringing up other budgets in relation to this.

It’ll cost £13.5 mill over the next 3 years after being trebled. £4.5 mill a year.

The Welsh budget is £24.6billion this year… so this will be 0.02% of the budget.

It’s a v small expenditure in the grand scheme.
There are plenty of studies on it, like this one.

“Students who learned a musical instrument were 18% more likely to aim at attending university.”

If this equates to more uni education, it means it’s going to cause economic growth in the long-term.

Another study:

“Our findings suggest that adolescents with music training have better school grades, are more conscientious, open and ambitious. These effects are stronger among adolescents from lower socio-economic status.”

BREAKING: Every 18 year old leaving care in #Wales will be offered £1,600 a month over 2 years under the basic income pilot. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

It's believed to be the highest amount offered on a scheme of its kind *ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD*.
It'll start later this year and around 500 people are expected to be eligible for the plan.

The basic income pilot could cost up to £20m over 3 years.

More Info: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-…
Critics say basic income doesn't have the expected outcomes and the money should be spent elsewhere - on the NHS etc.

Those in favour say it could reduce poverty and be easier and less stressful to navigate than more complex means-tested benefits.
