Have Arsenal improved? A thread
Starting with goals. Goals scored are slightly up, goals allowed are up and goal difference is bit worse than last but up from 2 years ago.
Taking a step back from goals looking at expected goals. Arsenal look better here, last season Arsenal performed better than expected, this year a bit worse.
Taking the next step back from expected goals looking at shots and the team looks much better.
Taking the next step back and looking at getting the ball into dangerous spots within 25 meters of goal. Not a huge difference from last season but there has been improvement in season this year.
Last let's take a look at field tilt, which is the measure of final third possession and by proxy the amount of pressure the team is under or is applying.

Again not a massive change from last year but a good in season trend
So have Arsenal improved? I think a bit.

The start of 20/21 was not good but showed good signs post boxing day. Arsenal started slow this year but have finished looking like a good team.
If Arsenal get top 4 I do think that they would have been a bit on the fortunate side playing more typically like a team in the 5th to 6th range than the 4th range
If we are looking at a longer view the team went from an 8th place finish that very well could have been worse based on the metrics, to an 8th place finish that had green shoots and was good by the end of year, to a team that will finish 5th with numbers that back up that finish.
Is that good enough?

That's for everyone else to make up their mind on.

My goal was 6th or better with numbers that supported that finish. That looks like it will happen.

It sucks to have missed out on top 4 but that wasn't my goal for the team at the start of the year.
Can you revise your goals as the season progresses? of course. I didn't because I still thought that this team was a year away from true top 4 contention and getting there this season would have been icing on the cake
Arsenal's radar for the season
This is how the team looked during the best run of the season.
Over the last 9 matches with everything on the line. Well not great. and the attack really suffered but the defense looked pretty solid.
Weighted xG difference over the last 3 years

As it is the start of transfer season I have done an update to my transfer inflation calculator. These are the biggest ever transfers adjusted for Transfer Inflation.

The Rio Ferdinand move in 02/03 is crazy at today's price. Image
Here is what it looks like for Arsenal. This goes back to 1996/97 only. Image
Chelsea's spending in the first 4 years of the Roman era would have been roughly equivalent to 650m, 550m, 300m, and 280m in today's transfer fees.

A thread with all the stats and graphics from the game. Now it is time for me to watch it.
Arsenal all over them in the opening few minutes. Got a couple nearly chances and some nice interplay.
Ummm. This was bad. That's a bad choice from Saliba to make that pass and way to casual with knowing where the pressure is (this happens too much) from Partey to let that run across his body.

I have spent a lot of my free time examining Aaron Ramsdale and I think that deserves a thread on what I have found thus far and where I think that deverges from the standard opinion of the player.

🧵
The first place to start is with his shot-stopping. He is rated as below average by StatsBomb, Opta, and Wyscout. On my model he comes out as basically bang average.
The average to below is also not a one season blip. For his career this is a consistent item. On Opta's data in the Premier League he has faced 657 shots on target, with 193 expected goals value but has allowed 202.

I have been thinking more about the Kai Havertz deal and I have really come to think it is a pretty exciting option and one that fits Arsenal quite well.

A thread on my thinking 🧵
I think even the bear case/worse scenario is that Arsenal get a player that adds depth and rotation options at 3-4 spots. Arsenal sorely needs RW options and he can provide that. Arsenal need more midfield depth (especially with attacking instincts) he can provide that.
The best case is that he re-finds the magic that made him one of the most exciting 8/10 prospects at Leverkusen. He makes the position on the left of a midfield three his own and really explodes. Image
