We caught up with lead author @MarcoDaverioMD to ask a few questions🧵👇🏻
Q: @MarcoDaverioMD, why did you & the team decide to do this survey?
A: There was a gap of knowledge on this topic, in fact information about the assessment and management of pain and sedation across European #PedsICU are currently unknown.
Q: How do you design a study when you expect serious variability across the answers?🧐
A: Planning is crucial! We tested, validated & modified the questions. Using closed questions we reduced the variability and facilitated the data analysis💪🏻
Q: What are the challenges of running a Europe-wide survey?
A: We wanted to reach out as many PICUs as possible so our results could be a reliable snapshot of the real situation across Europe. We had one "Country Lead" for each nation who was responsible for sharing the survey.
Q: You report low starting doses of pain medications compared to others. Is this a shift in practice?💊
A: That’s unclear. There is variation with some PICUs starting with very low doses. It may be a shift to an awake/light sedation practice following experiences in adults.
Q: Why should we monitor & protocolise presence & methods of pain monitoring? ✏️🗒️
A: Evaluating analgesia & sedation with age-appropriate & validated instruments is vital to achieve a “common language” across staff within & between #PedsICU to improve children’s outcomes.
Q: What is the next research step of the author group?📚
A: We will publish the second part of our research project on withdrawal & delirium monitoring throughout Europe🙌🏻. We have other plans including European recommendations on analgesia and sedation.
With thanks to all the co-authors of this paper & the Analgosedation CONSORTIUM👏🏻👏🏻
