A quick thread ๐Ÿงต of interesting / notable stats about Luton Town (#LTFC) from the 2021/22 Championship season ๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Pressure starts to pay off

We topped the league table for goal ending high turnovers with 11, thatโ€™s up from just three last season from exactly the same number of high turnovers (355).

2. Counter Unproductive

According to @WhoScored* we didnโ€™t score a single one of our 63 goals through a counter attack.

*their definition of 'counter attack' is unclear/undefined.

3. Simon says "I probably should've saved that"

Simon Sluga endued up rock bottom of all the goalkeepers in the Championship when it came to goal prevention with -6.3 goals prevented.

That is his Expected Goals On Target (XGOT) 17.7 - his goals conceded 24

4. The most off side

Luton topped the offside charts for the league having been caught 121 times, well over double the amount that bottom of the offside table Bournemouth were (47)

Elijah finished 2nd in the total offsides chart having been caught offside 42 times

5. Like it or (more likely) lump it

The offsides will obviously be linked to our speed / directness of play (shown below ๐Ÿ‘‡) and the fact that we, according to @wyscout, made the most long passes in the entire league (2609).

That's 50 long passes per 90.

6. When he shot, Luke buried them

Luke Berry topped the @fbref goals to shot ratio for the league (0.29) and @Wyscout had him as the 4th highest goals per 90 mins in the league (0.71).

N.B. this is from a relatively small sample size as he only played just over 700 mins ๐Ÿ˜”
7. Would Eli to you ref?

Elijah Adebayo committed the most fouls in the Championship (76) butโ€ฆ wasnโ€™t anywhere near the top for most yellows with only six bookings to his name.

Campbell (8), Naismith (8) and Lansbury (9) all got booked more times than Eli.

(via @fbref)
8. Possession Shmessession

Luton had the lowest ball possession in the entire league, averaging just 44.7% per game.

Way down from last year's 49.6% which saw us placed 10th in the ball possession table but finish six places lower in the actual league table.

(via @Wyscout)
9. That's us in the corner just losing our possession (and getting it back again)

Luton lost the ball the most times (5825) but... they were 2nd top for interceptions made (2222).

Oh & we also committed the most fouls in the league (581). #DirtySouthernBastards

10. Only aiming for the xG spot

We had the joint lowest number of shots in open play this season (317) level with Peterborough butโ€ฆ

we had the second highest xG per Open Play Shot Taken in the league (0.13) only behind Bournemouth (0.14).

11. ๐ŸŽถ He's just a... volume chance creator* ๐ŸŽถ

Cornick had the 2nd highest chances created in open play per 100 passes in the whole league (5.29), only behind Jed Wallace (5.63) & just short of his floppy haired counterpart Mr. Grealish (5.38).

*& goalscorer this season (12)!
In conclusion pt1:
- Our press resulted in way more goals
- Counter attacks resulted in nada
- Sluga didn't have the best season
- We're still shit at getting caught offside
- We made A LOT of long passes
- Bezza was clinical af
- Elijah gave away a lot of fouls but avoided cards
In conclusion pt2:
- Had the ball less than anyone else because we kept losing the bloody thing!
- but we won it back a lot via high turnovers & interceptions
- Barely took any shots but those we did take tended to be from very decent positions
- Corndog became creator & poacher
Thanks for reading this far.

As always RTs ๐Ÿ”, likes โค๏ธ, feedback ๐Ÿ’ฌ and questions โ“ are welcome.

Thanks to @OptaAnalyst, @Wyscout, @WhoScored and @fbref for all their lovely data.
