🧵Decentralized science, or #DeSci, has become a buzzword in the last six months. Although the word “decentralized” may harbor geographical connotations or signify the absence of centers of control,
the phenomenon of decentralization, in my opinion, is defined mainly by the way people come to work together united by a shared vision.
Conceptually, decentralization is closely related to the distributed ledger technology at the foundation of the blockchain architecture. However, to move away from technical lingo, I would say decentralization is a synthesis of three components innate to cryptospace:
1. Permissionless component – reflects the fact that the participation in a certain project is open to anyone, i.e. no permission or special access privileges are required.
2. Democratized component – reflects the fact that the hierarchy in such projects tends to be flat. Participants have equal access to community resources, and nominal leadership roles depend only on skill, talent, and time the participants are willing to devote to the project.
3. Tokenization component – reflects the fact that fundraising and collaboration are realized and incentivized by a crypto asset such as a utility token that supplies holders with project governance instruments or represents a stake in the project.
So what happens when we combine these three with a dedicated community built around a unifying purpose?
We would get a decentralized autonomous organization, or a DAO, where members from around the world tackle a community-defined problem – permissionlessly, in a democratic manner, while rewarded for their time and effort by digital assets such as governance tokens or stablecoins.
In the world of #DeSci DAOs, @BioDAOxyz is one example of a decentralized community aimed at solving a real-world issue – a problem of the so-called Valley of Death that represents all ideas, research results, and initiatives in academia...
that never made it to commercialized therapies and successful companies, collecting dust as undemanded IPs at university technology transfer offices or existing solely as journal publications that didn’t evolve into practical applications.

BioDAO’s mission is to help potential projects cross the Valley of Death through early-stage funding and community support, developing and delivering life-saving therapies to patients faster.

The emerging #DeSci landscape represents an alternative to legacy funding and commercialization mechanisms. Although still an experiment, a growing interest in the movement and flow of talent to DAOs captures a huge demand for more efficient models in the biotech industry./
