Now seems a good time to talk about the Vampire of the Carribbean and how a rogue Haitian company was selling HIV tainted blood to American hospitals. Image
This is the tale of Hemo-Caribbean and its creator Luckner Cambronne, right hand man to Papa Doc Duvalier and leader of the notorious paramilitary force, the Tonton Macoute. Image
Luckner Cambronne was born in 1929, the son of a poor Protestant
preacher. Starting out as a bank teller, he eventually found a job in the
company of François Duvalier (Papa Doc). Cambronne quickly rose to become chief extortionist for Papa Doc's regime. Image
Despite stealing huge sums from the ministries he held, and redirecting public infrastructure funds towards his own accounts, Cambronne also bullied, extorted and intimidated local businessmen. They would 'donate' to the regime, those who failed often disappeared. Image
Cambronne eventually headed up Duvalier's personal militia, the Tonton Macoute. Named after a voodoo monster who kidnaps children, the Macoute beat, raped, stoned, burnt, extorted and rampaged across Haiti, silencing all opposition. ImageImage
Cambronne identified a number of business opportunities as leader of the Macoute. Taxi companies, travel and divorce companies and selling dead and murdered bodies to US medical schools. In the early 1970's he started Hemo-Caribbean with Joseph Gorinstein, a Miami businessman. Image
Hemo-Caribbean ran out of Port-au-Prince. Initially a two-story building with capacity for 350 plasma donors, overseen by an Austrian biochemist. By 1972 the company was harvesting 6000 litres of plasma a month.
The New York Times ran an investigative report, describing how impoverished Haitians were being farmed for their plasma and paid very little. Image
A local doctor commented: ‘The plasma cows are
rather tired, but they don’t have a job anyway.’
An author estimated
that around 6,000 Haitians sold their plasma to Hemo-
Caribbean. Gorinstein claimed
that in late 1972 Hemo-Caribbean was paying donors an average of
$70,000 each month: at $4 per donation, this corresponds to 700
different donors each day.
After Papa Doc's death, his son Baby Doc took over rule of Haiti. Cambronne was in a threatening position and was ousted. By the end of 1972 Hemo-Caribbean was forcibly closed down.
Disastrously, Hemo-Caribbean opened at exactly the time the new HIV-B strain had entered Haiti. Noone knew to look or screen for it, and since plasma donors were reinfused with their own red blood cells, poor hygeine compounded with rampant infection provided the perfect cover. Image
Follow up surveys on HIV patients in Haiti neglected to ask about plasma donation to Hemo-Caribbean, neither did an academic review paper looking at blood banks in Haiti. The company slipped under the radar Image
The frozen plasma was exported on Air Haiti, Cambronne’s company, and sold to four American enterprises: Armour Pharmaceutical, Cutter Laboratories, Dade Reagents and Dow Chemical, as well as to clients in Germany and Sweden.
Nobody knows how many people became infected with HIV through these sales. Although some may have been used to make albumin and immunoglobulins, which deactives the virus, for haemophiliacs, the factor VIII treatment meant plasma was pooled with up to 25k other donations.
Cambronne died quietly in Miami in 2006, a far too pleasant a death for a man who disappeared countless people, tortured and intimidated his way into power and helped spread a deadly virus around the world.
I'll leave you with one of his famous and chilling sayings:

"A good Duvalierist is prepared to kill
his own children for Duvalier, and also expects his children to kill their
parents for him" Image

The 'Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice, other Inhuman and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013' is a piece of Indian legislation aimed at tackling the problem of religious human sacrifice and other similar activities 👇🧵 Image
The specific clauses of the act cover a range of magical and religious acts that could lead to harm, death or manipulation - eg coercive sex or theft of money. The list is so specific you have to imagine each of these things has been reported before. Image
Image
The origins of the bill go back to 2003 and every step of the legislative process has faced fierce opposition. One of its greatest advocates, Dr Narendra Dabholkar, was shot dead in 2013 by Hindu nationalists. Image

Neoliberalism is a very popular word in academia, but what is it supposed to mean and how is it actually used? Why is it deployed to explain everything from occultic organ harvesting circles to musical entrepreneurship? 🧵 Image
Let us start with some definitions. Although heavily debated the definition of neoliberalism is supposed to be - the extension of the market to all parts of public life, a strong (but minimal?) state to facilitate this, and firm belief in individual agency. Image
Image
How has this definition come to be used in academia and research though? Here's a few examples drawn at random from google scholar:

Using 'food justice' to fight against racial neoliberalism and mass incarceration... Image

In AD 256 a unit of Roman miners led a counterattack against their Sasanian besiegers at the city of Dura-Europos.

What happened next has been recorded in minute detail by archaeologists, and remains amongst the earliest and most horrifying uses of chemical weapons in war 🧵 Image
The fortified city of Dura-Europos on the Syrian Euphrates had been founded by the Seleucids. After falling to the Parthians and then the Romans in AD 165, it became an important outpost and border fort, somewhere between a town and a military garrison. Image
The Sasanian siege of AD 256 under Shapur I was part of their expansion and warfare against the Roman Empire, although no documentation of the siege has survived, if it ever existed. Image

In Oct 2012 a strange object was found whilst a canal was being drained in western Massachusetts. A cauldron - filled with railroad spikes, a knife, coins, herbs, a padlock and a human skull.

Welcome to the world of Palo Mayombe in America 🧵 Image

Afro-syncretic religions in the Americas are plentiful, and include some well known examples like Santeria, Haitian Voodoo and Rastafari. These religions are a mix of native African and American beliefs, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Image
The exact 'flavour' of these diaspora religions often depends on which African peoples they originated with - for example Santeria is derived in part from the Yoruban religions of West Africa. Image

In 2015 British officials travelled to Nigeria to help track down a witchdoctor who had used a juju magical oath to prevent trafficked girls in Britain from testifying against a smuggling gang.

Why did this happen? 🧵 Image
The trafficking of young women and girls from Nigeria into Europe for the sex trade and cheap labour increased dramatically after the death of Gaddafi and Libya's descent into anarchy. Image
Slave markets and human trafficking exploded in Libya in the absence of governmental control. Young girls can easily be bought and sold here, and sent from Africa to Italy and then into Europe. Image

How do you legislate against a belief in witchcraft? If you genuinely believe your neighbour is trying to kill you with black magic, do you have the right to use violence against them?

Let's take a look at how the 'reasonable belief' test has been applied in Africa 🧵 Image
First off, how many people are killed as suspected witches every year in Africa? That's hard to say, but some estimates from South Africa alone suggest many thousands. Image
Anglophone African countries possess many types of anti-witchcraft legislation, leftover from British colonial rule. Murder relating to witchcraft and sorcery was clearly rife enough that colonial administrators required specific laws to deal with it. Image
