Using the extended clip of the Al Jazeera footage, we sent the gunfire audio for analysis by Rob Maher. He concluded the gap between the crack and blast sounds indicated the gunmen were between 177-197 meters from where Abu Akleh was shot.
Looking at geolocated social media videos from the surrounding area, we found IDF trucks located within that 200m area. We found no one else within this radius.
These trucks also appear in the IDF’s own bodycam footage of the operation that morning.
We separately examined visual evidence of the bullet markings on the tree where Abu Akleh was killed. The multiple strike marks showed that the shooting was targeted and not the produce of random gunfire spray.
Eyewitnesses told us not only that the attack felt targeted and there were continued shoots as they tried to retrieve Abu Akleh’s body. In the words of eyewitness Shatha Hanaysha: “they wanted to kill us”
