There's a new competitor to DALL-E out there: Google's Imagen.

I don't have access to Imagen but I do have some of their example images. Let's do some side-by side comparisons.

(left is Imagen, right is DALL-E)

1. "A blue jay standing on a large basket of rainbow macarons." ImageImage
2. "A brain riding a rocketship heading towards the moon."

(again, left is Imagen, right is DALL-E) ImageImage
3. "An alien octopus floats through a portal reading a newspaper."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
4. "A single beam of light enter the room from the ceiling. The beam of light is illuminating an easel. On the easel there is a Rembrandt painting of a raccoon"

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
5. "An art gallery displaying Monet paintings. The art gallery is flooded. Robots are going around the art gallery using paddle boards."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
6. "A robot couple fine dining with Eiffel Tower in the background."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
I don't have access to Imagen - so these Imagen examples are all from Google's new release. Loads here: imagen.research.google

Imagen is by @Chitwan_Saharia and @GoogleAI - thread idea from @joeyliaw and @NathanpmYoung
7. "Sprouts in the shape of text 'Imagen' coming out of a fairytale book"

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
8. "A dragon fruit wearing karate belt in the snow."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
9. "A photo of a Corgi dog riding a bike in Times Square. It is wearing sunglasses and a beach hat."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
10. "A dog looking curiously in the mirror, seeing a cat."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
11. "A small cactus wearing a straw hat and neon sunglasses in the Sahara desert."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
12. "Teddy bears swimming at the Olympics 400m Butterfly event."

(L: Imagen, R: DALL-E) ImageImage
13. "A giant cobra snake on a farm. The snake is made out of corn."

There are too few clear overviews of x-risk from AI.

So I tried to write a new one.

(@80000Hours’ previous article was from 2017!)

This was difficult - lots of articles on this are (imo) confused.

I (hopefully!) did things differently: 80000hours.org/problem-profil…

🧵⤵️
1. I address lots of (I think) common misconceptions about AI risk

Many people - including me a year ago - have all sorts of objections to working on AI risk that I am no longer confident about
So I included a long FAQ (80000hours.org/problem-profil…) of common objections to which I think there are good responses.

Things like:

- Is it ok to make big decisions under such high uncertainty?
- Is this a form of Pascal’s mugging?
- Why can’t we just unplug a dangerous AI?

There's lots of talk about the UK's political and constitutional crisis.

But Boris Johnson's resignation after nearly 3 years in office is actually a huge win for the UK's weird, unwritten norms-based constitution - and will, I think, only serve to strengthen it.

Here's why:
1) Since 1900, here's why short-lived PMs resigned:

Douglas-Home (1 yr, 1 day): health concerns
Eden (1 yr, 279 days): Suez Crisis
Brown (2 yrs, 318 days): lost election
Chamberlain (2 yrs, 348 days): WW2
May (3 yrs, 11 days): Brexit
Callaghan (3 yrs, 29 days): lost election
2) That is to say: This is a really unusual resignation. Boris Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative party because of his election-winning potential, and went on to win the biggest parliamentary majority since 1987.

As he likes to remind us, his mandate was huge.

No, DALL-E doesn’t have a secret language.

(or at least, we haven't found one yet)

This viral DALL-E thread has some pretty astounding claims. But maybe the reason they’re so astounding is that, for the most part, they're not true.

Thread 👇🧵 (1/15)

Let’s start with some of the basic claims.

1) @giannis_daras says "Contarra ccetnxniams luryca tanniounons" means bugs or pests.

This just seems wrong.

Here's what I get if I put "Contarra ccetnxniams luryca tanniounons" into DALL-E - lots of different animals.

(2/15)
The key to claims of a DALL-E "secret language" is that these terms apply across DALL-E prompts - including when used in more complex prompts, like asking DALL-E to output in other styles.

But if I add “, 3d render” to the prompt I get sea-related things, not bugs.

DALL-E is crazy impressive.

But I’m getting a feel for what it can and can’t do, and there are some quite noticeable limitations you won’t see on the curated publicised examples (including my own).

So, 8 limitations of DALL-E, a thread:

(also, have a #dalle koala doing magic)
1) It can take a lot of adjusting prompts to get something good.

e.g. This was actually generated with “A renaissance-style painting of a modern supermarket aisle. In the aisle is a crowd of shoppers with shopping trolleys trying to get reduced items.”

2) Sometimes it misunderstands what you meant, especially with long prompts.

e.g. “A photograph with captions from an interior design catalogue displaying an apartment in a mind operated by a homunculus.” It interpreted “operated” as a medical operation.
