Trans women need a safe space to meet other trans women that isn’t sad like a support group. They need a place where they can try cute new looks without fear. They need a place where they can party without knowing how to dance.

Solution: A trans-run comedy show. Hear me out 🧵

I know. Standup Comedy has a bad name. It’s earned it’s rep to the younger generation. So many of the biggest comics just kind of tell old, douchey, and white men what they want to hear.

But that comedy isn’t for us. It’s for people who tend to hate us.

Comedy isn’t Netflix specials. Netflix specials are a recording of comedy. Performing to big theaters isn’t as personal of a medium. I prefer comedy when it’s intimate.

I think Bo Burnham’s Inside was the best special of the year. There was no crowd and it was all shot in one small room in a house. It resonated so well because that’s what we were all feeling in 2021.

We felt like we were in the room with him.

The theme of Spend the Night was designed so you’d feel like you were in the room with us. An intimate space where we spent much of our childhood alone or with some of our best friends. A bedroom late at night in pjs.

With trans girls, we weren’t really…allowed in these spaces with our friends. We didn’t get to wear cute pjs and have pink bedrooms and talk shit about boys w our girl friends.

But now we can!

We intentionally run the visual style of our show to repel people who want to control women. We wear lingerie to push away the kind of customer who doesn’t support female empowerment.

Simultaneously, we push away people who don’t support trans women.

“Better to be slut shamed than gender shamed” is pretty much the mantra of my life. When they’re upset about being able to see your tits, it’s harder for em to get mad about you being trans.

Thanks to this: our shows are a safe space for trans women.

A comedy show isn’t just a place where you quietly sit and watch someone talk- it’s a place to meet people. It’s a place where creatives showcase their art and meet other people who do the same.

It’s a party.

And this one is run by a trans woman for trans women :)

I’m really glad to have this space and thankful to all the people who helped me build it. I’ve met so many amazing people running this thing and I can’t picture my life without them. I literally met my girlfriend at a show lol

Spend the Night is going on the road over the summer. We’re going to hit NY, DC, CHI, STL, and we’re still adding new locations.

I really hope the trans community in these cities comes out.
