Ryan,

Let me get this straight. Your solution, as Secretary of Education for Oklahoma, is to have more guns in our schools? So please confirm that you are recommending that our teachers and team members in schools should be armed. If so, I have a number of questions.

Deborah
Since you make it pretty clear in your latest car video that the answer is yes, I’ll go on with my questions.
1. Who will purchase the guns and the ammunition? Or will teachers be expected to buy their own as they too often must buy their own supplies for their classrooms in Oklahoma?
2. Will there be any training necessary or provided for the armed people in the schools? Will CLEET training be required? Will active shooter training be required?
3. Where will the guns be kept? Where will the ammunition be kept? Will they be locked and protected to prevent accidental shootings by children?
4. Since most of these mass shootings are conducted by people with automatic weapons, will the teachers also have automatic weapons to be able to meet the power of force?
5. As demonstrated by the horrible shooting in the grocery store recently, the shooter was wearing a bulletproof vest and the armed security guard was not. As a result, the armed security guard was shot quickly and left unable to protect those in the store.
6 (actually 5 con’t) So, should teachers now also be wearing bulletproof vests?
7. Since these shootings happen so quickly, it doesn’t seem it would be useful to have weapons at the school locked away. By the time they are located, unlocked, and loaded, the people who need to use them for protection of children & colleagues will likely already be killed.
8. (Actually 7 con’t.) So, should our teachers just wear the loaded automatic weapons over their shoulders?
9. When the police arrive to the school, how will they know that our teachers who are armed are the protectors of children and not the active shooter? Will our teachers also now need to wear uniforms and badges?
10. Is arming people in our schools your only solution? Do you have any other ideas for protecting our children and our teachers in our schools in Oklahoma? If so, please share those urgently. Your leadership is needed at this time.

Also, @sec_walters, in case you’re wondering, here is my recommendation.

You & @GovStitt urgently convene a bipartisan, statewide task force in June.
Study all that is known about the many school shootings & determine the best next steps to take to protect our children, teachers, & school teams.
Include the voices of parents, students, teachers, school leaders, counselors & other mental health providers, school resource officers, & local law enforcement.
