After the mammoth #IPL2022 has finally finalised, I have taken a look at how the teams measured up against their pre-tournament stats. The first part of this thread is a deep dive into each team followed by some country, age and bowling type stats
Firstly detail of a few of the data parameters I used to do this.
Team battings averages - the figures for batters, wicket keepers and all-rounders have been used
Teams bowling averages - the figures for bowlers and all-rounders have been used
#IPL2022
We saw some high scoring #IPL2022 games but which team scored the most runs? Well the power hitters of PBKS are way out front here with 3215 in total but its GT who have the highest av per player at 193. It’s clear to SRH struggled with the bat scoring only 2067 runs in total
The saying goes batters win you games but bowlers win you tournaments show which team had the best bowling unit? Based on wickets taken it’s RR with 96, closely followed by GT with 92. It’s no surprise KKR struggled with only 58 wickets in the whole of #IPL2022
We’ve seen the runs scored but did teams improve their batting avg and SR? This graph shows the % improvement compared to the career scores of the teams before the IPL. The 2 new teams are the standout here with GT increasing their avg by 24% and LSG a 17% increase in SR
With most teams improving their batting figures it was a tough #IPL2022 for the bowlers. LSG are the only team who bettered their bowling avg by 13%, all other teams saw considerable drops in both their bowling avg and economy rates. It really was the year of the batter!
Now for a dive into each teams batting and bowling improvements. Looking at CSK and their batting it is clear to see why they struggled. Only Dube and Conway bettered their batting figures whereas Dwayne Bravo saw his avg drop by over 50%. #IPL2022
We know CSK had fitness issues in the bowling unit but there were some shining lights with Bravo, Solanki & Moeen improving their bowling figures. Chris Jordan saw the biggest drop of any players with is avg dropping by 140%! Bowling improvements must be a focus for CSK #IPL2022
DC had an up and down this year, facing COVID issues and probably didn’t perform to their potential. Batting wise Axar and Warner had the most improved average and SR, I think DO would have expected more from big name batters like Shaw, Marsh and Pant #IPL2022
How does their bowling fare? Looking at this I still feel they retained the wrong South African bowler in Nortje. The unexpected stars of this line up were Yadav and Ahmed who both bucked the trend and improved their bowling stats by around 25%. #IPL2022
Onto the first of the new teams and #IPL2022 winners GT who had the highest team batting increase. Miller is the standout here raising his avg by 94%!. Notable mentions for Hardik, Rashid and Saha. I think GT would have expected more from Wade than they got.
We know #IPL2022 was tough for bowlers but did the champions follow this trend? Honestly yes they did, only Hardik, Shami and Sangwan saw a slight increase in the bowling figures compared to their averages. Even the superb Rashid Khan saw a 3% drop in his econ rates!
KKR had a disappointing #IPL2022 % only have 4 players in Cummins, Narine, Russell and Rinku who improved on their career batting stats. Finch, Billings and Iyer saw considerable drops of around 50% in their averages, batting really needs to be a focus for KKR in the mini auction
We saw earlier the KKR bowling unit took the least wickets in #IPL2022 so it is no surprise a lot of bowlers struggled. Stand outs are Dre Russ, Southee and Yadav who all improved their avg by around 30%, Chakravarthy would have been a real disappointment to the team this year.
LSG surpassed all expectations in their 1st #IPL2022 yet only a few of their batters improved on their career scores, Badoni is a great find with a 70% increase in his SR and a huge 151% increase in his SR. Captain KL increased is avg but that SR needs some work next year.
Remember earlier that LSG were the only ones to increase their team bowling scores, well Moshin, Avesh, Hooda, Stioinis and Gowtham all bettered their avg. Compared to the last few seasons Bishnoi was disappointing and will hope to change that next year #IPL2022
Fans of MI need to look away now. In my preview I said ‘on paper it is looking like a really tough year for MI’ and boy it was that. Looking at their batting stats the decision to drop Tim David early on looks just as crazy as it was. Even Rohit couldn’t save them #IPL2022
MI went into #IPL2022 with a dodgy looking bowling line up and there really isn’t much to shout about after the event. Injuries to Mills, Sams being expensive, Bumrah and Pollard off form, it really was a year to forget for MI. #IPL2022
PBKS were the #IPL2022 highest scorers with 3015 runs but looking at the 2022 stats compared to career averages only Livi, Jitesh, Shikhar & Rajapaksa improved their scores. The key for PBKS next year will be how to use Mayank and Bairstow to their strengths
Does their bowling match their batting powers? In a word No. They had the 3rd highest bowling economy of all teams with 9 players going at over 9’s. Only Ellis and Rabada improved their scores, Arshdeep and Chahar had disappointing seasons by their high standards
We all know RR had the supremely inform Jos Buttler but how did their #IPL2022 batting stack up? All of Hetmyer, Samson, Ashwin, Buttler and Jaiswal improved their avg and SR. They key for RR next year will be how to get the best of Padikkal in this line up
Chahal just sneaked the Purple cap with his final wicket but what about the rest of the RR bowling unit? The Indian pacers of Sen, Saini and Krishna all improved on their career avg scores. Ashwin really dropped back though but this year saw the emergence of Ashwin the batter
On paper RCB batting line up looked impressive & this seems to have translated. Hero of qualifier 1 Patidar saw a huge increase in his avg & SR but the absolute star of the team was @DineshKarthik with his defined finisher role. Captain Faf has a great base to build on
Despite their 8th place finish, SRH have some positives take from #IPL2022. Every batter other than Kane and Washi saw a big jump on their career figures with Tripati & Pooran showing a 50% improvement. SRH have a big decision to make about captain Kane next year.
In Umran Malik SRH have found the fastest Indian bowler, only he and Natarajan improved against their career avg scores. The economy scores are a different story though, SRH have the 2nd worst rate in #IPL2022 so this will need some work if they want 2023 to be a success.
So that’s the team breakdowns done but what about other trends. Lets take a look at which countries players were the stars. No surprise with the form of Buttler that ENG players have an avg of 286 runs per player, SA aren’t far behind with 212. WI is surprisingly low at just 115.
#IPL2022 was the year of the batter and AFG and AUS have the best SR of all countries at 206 and 160 respectively. ENG players have the best average at 25, mainly due to the sublime form of Jos Buttler. NZ have the lowest avg and SR of all countries despite Conways form for CSK.
We know bowlers had a tough time in #IPL2022 but which countries excelled? No surprise that AFG with the ever economical Rashid Khan top the rankings in both avg and economy. The rest are fairly similar other than ENG who are way out with a huge avg of 44.91.
T20 cricket seems obsessed with left hand/right hand batting combinations but which performed the best in #IPL2022? Well it’s a win for the lefties with a SR of 129 and avg of 25.9, compared to right handers @120 and 19. Will teams be looking for lefties in 2023?
Most teams love a miserly spinner but did #IPL2022 give us that? Actually no, it’s left arm orthodox spinners who have the highest avg at 44.3. The most economical were left arm med-fast bowlers like Boult and Moshin Khan, whereas right arm med-fasts went the distance at 9.43
Does #IPL2022 favour the youthful exuberance? Actually it was the 37 year olds who on average scored the most runs per player at 392 way ahead of the 36 year olds at 276 runs. The 24 year olds need to up their game at just 78 runs per player
Does the picture change when looking at avg and SR? This is closer but the 34 year olds just pip the 28 year olds with a 148.26 SR, helped by DreRuss and Moeen. The 37 year olds also take the best avg crown at 34.7 so there sure is life in the old men of #IPL2022
Is there a correlation between bowlers and age? Well the 31 year who have the lowest vg at 22.24 and the second lowest econ rate at 7.48. On the flip side the 29 year olds need to pull their socks up at 10.86 economy and the 28 year olds with an avg just shy of 40
Well for those of you who are still here and saw it through to the end – THANK YOU! I know there is a lot there but hopefully it give you a view of how each team performed against their starting stats.
And finally a quick poll to see whether running a comparison of the pre and post tournament stats is something that people would like to see in the future

Despite England’s poor red ball form there is some serious anticipation for the #CountyChampionship starting.
I’ve been looking at data and as usual I have summarised in a thread but I warn you, it is a deep thread…
Firstly detail of a few of the data parameters I used
For all players their career First Class figures have been used

Team battings averages - the figures for batters, wicket keepers and all-rounders have been used

Teams bowling averages - the figures for bowlers and all-rounders have been used.
Let’s start with the makeup of each county. Does the growing focus on all-rounders translate into county game? It seems for some it does, Leics and Glous squad is just under 30% all-rounders. At the other end Middlesex have just 1. Will Derbyshires small squad be an issue?

With excitement for the #IPL2022 building I’ve been looking into the data and what it tells us. If you don’t like IPL & data I suggest you look away now, for those that do buckle up as it’s a long ride.
The first half of this shows overall stats then a deep dive on each team.
We start with looking at makeup of each franchise. There is a growing focus on all-rounder’s, 45% of the MI and PBKS squad are ALR. SRH however have 43 % of their squad as bowlers, are they going with the ‘batters win you games, bowlers win you tournaments’ approach? #IPL2022
Is the #IPL2022 a young man’s game or will the old man’s army win out again? Actually it’s GT rather than CSK who have the oldest overall squad at 28.73yrs, MI have the youngest team with an average of 24.76. Will the experience of GT see them have a successful first IPL?

After getting hold of the #IPL auction list in excel, I’ve pulled a few interesting (if your a cricket and data geek) trends out of there. This thread will show you a few of these….
#IPLAuction #IPL2022MegaAuction
The average age of the players in the auction is 26yrs old. The youngest is 17 and oldest is 43. Extra geek points for naming them both… #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022
The next one is about the ‘specialism’ of the players: 38% ALR, 34% bowlers and only 17% batters. Are out and out batters a dying trend? #IPLAuction #IPLAuction2022 #IPL2022
