A quick note: we're experiencing an all-time high load right now. We've provisioned more capacity, but increased traffic may cause slow response times.
We'll release a full drop day retrospective in the coming weeks. Thanks for your patience and stay OPtimistic! 🔴✨
If it wasn’t clear by now, this isn't your average token launch.
The Optimism Collective is so much more: a grand experiment in decentralized governance that will evolve over time. OP and the Token House are just the first step.
OP Drop #1 🪂 is live NOW. But first, a recap:
Just over a month ago, we announced our large-scale experiment in digital democratic governance, with a mission of realigning the internet with its constituents.
Shortly after, we announced the OP Stimpack, a two-phase incentive program which activates 231,928,234 OP (5.4% of initial supply) to stimulate growth in the digital city of Optimism.
We have almost 30 Phase 0 proposals. Phase 1 proposals open up soon.
These proposals will constitute the inaugural vote of the Token House, with incentives expected to be distributed to projects over the coming weeks and months.
We also released the first OPerating Manual for the Optimism Collective.
In line with our iterative approach to sustainable governance, this is a living document. We break it all down in “This Governance Will Self Destruct”:
In order to ensure community alignment, we’ve scalped over 17k sybil addresses which slipped through our initial criteria, and redistributed the reclaimed OP to recipients of Drop #1 🪂.
Remember: OP is L2-native and not yet bridgeable to L1. This means that OP ONLY lives on the Optimism L2, for now. Beware of any fake L1 clones!
A critical part of the claims process is to delegate your voting power to a community member of your choice.
Please take some time to select a delegate who reflects your values--these choices will have real impact on the future of the protocol. Or, delegate to yourself!
The claims process is pretty straightforward, but we've put together this short video to walk you through it:
If you have any questions or concerns, reach out on Discord in #user-support.
Missed out on Drop #1? Don't worry--we're approaching distribution of OP the same way we are governance: iteratively. There will be more drops that support meaningful engagement with projects in the ecosystem.
The release of OP marks the end of one chapter and the start of an entirely new one on our journey towards a more open, human-centric internet.
In the meantime, it's going to be a hot #OPSummer.
Remember to stay cool and, as always, Optimistic! 🔴✨
OP Drop #1 had a turbulent launch which we finally stabilized after more than five hours of non-stop work.
We’ll be publishing a full, detailed retrospective on the lessons learned next week. Let’s quickly talk about what happened.
At 11am (EST) we deployed and loaded our MerkleDistributor contract with the OP tokens for Drop #1. Our biggest mistake here was failing to make this contract pausable. Claims were open, and we had no way to stop them.
Pandora's box was OPened (gotta love immutability)!
We then deployed our claims UI in preparation for our official announcement. We significantly underestimated the amount of expected load that this would have on our public RPC endpoint. When website visitors found the claims link, the public RPC started getting slammed.
We’ve been carefully analyzing OP Airdrop #1 for sybil attackers that slipped through the cracks. We’re happy to announce that we’ve removed an additional 17k sybil addresses and recovered over 14 million OP. Bye bye sybils!
All of the OP recovered will be redistributed proportionally to other recipients of Airdrop #1. It’s like an extra mini airdrop 🔴✨
We were extremely careful with the filtering we applied to remove sybils. We’d like to thank the community members who’ve helped us by reporting suspicious accounts. A list of removed addresses can be found here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
When Optimism introduced EVM Equivalence last year, it set the standard for what a rollup needs to look like to remain competitive.
Optimism was the first rollup to introduce core features like:
- Advanced calldata compression
- Support for every EVM opcode and precompile
- Complete Ethereum gas compatibility
- Total tooling support
- Blazing fast EVM-equivalent execution
