1/ In Iowa, conservative farmers and an environmental group are forming an unlikely alliance.

The common enemy? A carbon dioxide pipeline. Farmers fear it could ruin their crop yield and expose their families to a hazardous gas.

politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
2/ The drama centers around 3 proposed carbon dioxide pipelines that would carry emissions from ethanol refineries to storage in underground rock formations in North Dakota and Illinois.

One $4.5B project would cut through Iowa’s prized cornfields.

politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
3/ Kathy Stockdale is no climate activist. The Iowa farmer & conservative Christian says God controls the weather — “not the carbon dioxide.”

Until now, she and her husband couldn’t imagine teaming up with @SierraClub, a corn ethanol industry critic and Biden environmental ally.
4/ Environmental groups like @SierraClub have long opposed carbon capture and storage technology.

They argue it props up coal, oil, natural gas and some biofuels like ethanol that should be on their way out because of their climate-warming emissions.

politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
5/ The Sierra Club is pushing back on the idea that any technology that can drive down heat-trapping carbon emissions deserves a spot in Biden’s climate plan.

A coal plant or oil refinery with the technology would still pollute in other ways, from air toxins to water discharges.
6/ Meanwhile, farmers like the Stockdales see the pipeline as unnecessary and a scar on their land. And they’ll take any allies they can get.

“The land ultimately belongs to [God] and I need to take care of it," Kathy said. "It is our responsibility.”

Scoop: A new PAC says it’s going to spend $1 million on TV spots, mailers and & ads to support a primary challenger trying to unseat progressive firebrand Rashida Tlaib.

Here’s what that means for Michigan’s Aug. 2 primary. 👇
politico.com/newsletters/th…
The Urban Empowerment Action PAC supports candidates who are “dedicated to the educational empowerment and economic uplift of Black communities.” They’re backing Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey, according to a release first shared with us.
politico.com/f/?id=00000181…
The background: There are fears that Detroit, the nation’s largest majority Black city, may not have a single Black representative in the next Congress with the retirement of Rep. Brenda Lawrence. (Winfrey is Black and Tlaib is Palestinian-American.)

A new investigation from Politico’s @EENewsUpdates has pulled back the curtain on FEMA’s unfair flood grant programs, which for years have favored wealthy and white areas.

Here are some of the key findings👇🧵
politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
Our analysis shows clear race- and wealth-based patterns in the 18 states that have received nearly all of the FEMA elevation funds.

In 12 of those states, more than half of the FEMA elevation money has gone to communities that are wealthy or overwhelmingly white.
In 4 states – KY, MA, OH and WV – over 75% of the FEMA elevation money has gone to rich or overwhelmingly white communities.

And in 6 states, at least 40% has gone to one affluent or overwhelmingly white community.

.@GaSecofState Brad Raffensperger – Georgia’s election chief who Trump blasted during the 2020 election for refusing to “find” more votes – picked up a big primary win on Tuesday. Here’s how he went from Trump outcast to MAGA vanquisher 👇
Raffensperger spent hours on the road meeting w/ voters and any group that would have him — even when they wanted to relitigate the 2020 vote that Raffensperger has consistently defended as clean and fair. He also appeared regularly on conservative media.
politico.com/news/2022/02/2…
The rural counties of Whitfield & Murray highlight Raffensperger’s turnaround. In April 2021, the local GOP told him to resign. On Tuesday, he won a strong plurality of voters in both counties. That + support in the Atlanta area helped him avoid a runoff.

Today is Georgia’s highly anticipated primary election — former President Trump’s biggest test to date. Here’s what to know 👇

politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
Trump has been the lead provocateur for a war within the GOP party.

His goal: oust GOP incumbents who thwarted his plans to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

His targets: Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger

politico.com/news/2022/05/2…
Georgia Dems are also in the middle of a fight.

Much to the chagrin of party leaders, Reps. Carolyn Bordeaux and Lucy McBath, two rising Democratic stars, are battling each other thanks to the GOP-controlled Legislature’s redrawn congressional map.

Welcome to the most important — and potentially dramatic — primary night of the year.

With most of Kentucky’s races called, our eyes are on the Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon and Idaho primaries.

Here are a few things to watch👇🧵
politico.com/news/2022/05/1…
Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania:

After Trump’s endorsement, Mehmet Oz surged in the GOP Senate primary polls over the final weeks. But Kathy Barnette's last-minute rise in the polls sent MAGA world scrambling.
politico.com/news/2022/05/1…
More Pennsylvania drama:

Barnette and gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano have Republicans worried. Both were at the Jan. 6 insurrection and many Republicans see them as borderline unelectable.
