The Republicans are literally weaponizing their political views. At the core of their message is a call to arms. They are saying their ultimate answer to the Democratic agenda or a government that seeks to enforce laws with which they don't agree is gunfire.
We need to stop with the gun control rhetoric of decades past & recognize this sea-change in the nature of the our discussion about how we are to deal with the divisions in our society. We have already seen a violent insurrection supported by the leaders of the Republican Party.
We have Congresspeople brandishing guns and making heroes of shooters who have gunned down those they perceive as political opponents. We have disinformation being spread about the agenda of mythical radical groups like "Antifa."
We have a party that refuses to do anything to stop the tsunami of guns that has put weapons in the hands of extremists, of the mentally unbalanced, of criminals but also of political cultists who regularly use the language of warfare to describe their mission.
This is a cancer that is metastasizing throughout our body politic. It not only results in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocents annually, has not only resulted in more deaths in the past sixty years than the toll of all the wars in which Americans have fought...
but it threatens something even worse. It threatens that we soon become a society in which the divisions are marked by rivers of blood. This sounds over-the-top. It is not. It is what the daily headlines show. It is a thesis supported by mountains of evidence.
The debate is not about guns. It is about embracing the right's agenda or else, rejecting the rights of people of color or women or else, of accepting an extremist theocratic agenda or else, of denying progress, of rejecting the rule of law, of gutting democracy...or else.
See it for what it is. And recognize that there is but one way to fight this. Democrats must win substantially majorities in the Senate and the House. Their leaders must then take action to end the filibuster and end our gun pathology, fix our courts, restore our democracy.
They want to take to the streets. We must take to the ballot box...and then have the vision and courage to end this grotesque existential threat we face together, the threat of a return to a society where the rules are written at the end of the barrel of a gun.

I would like to see a new chapter in the campaign for gun control in the U.S. It begins with leadership at the top. The president should deliver a speech and in it he should lay out the problem. He should offer up the data demonstrating that we are an outlier nation on guns.
He should say that no other nation has the problem we have. He should defuse the distractions and absurdities offered up by gun advocates when they try to say "guns are not the problem." He should then note, unflinchingly, that the opponents of gun control are all Republicans.
He can provide data to back this up too. He can observe this wasn't always the case. He can note that Scalia was the justice who wrote that the 2d Amend. does not confer an absolute right. He can note that former Chief Justice Burger, appointed by Nixon...

Do children in the US have a right not to be torn apart by bullets? Do they have a right not to cower in terror as a murderer guns down their teachers? Do they have a right not to lose their friends to slaughter? Do they have a right not fear going to school every day?
Do parents in the US have a right to believe their children will return home from school at the end of each day? Do they have a right not to face being asked to identify their children's mangled bodies? A right not to be asked to provide DNA to help identify their dead offspring?
We hear a lot about the rights of gun owners but what about the rights of victims of gun crimes--the dead, the wounded, the emotionally shattered? Guns, the gun lobby, gun lobby-owned legislators and officials deprive us of the most important of all rights.

During our @DeepStateRadio discussion today with @Laurie_Garrett & @KavitaPMD, it became clearer to me that right wing politics in America is one of the greatest public health crises we face. Believe it or not, that's an entirely non-partisan statement.
Just look at:
--The right wing's anti-vax and anti-mask campaigns and the huge death toll they produced
--Their views on guns and the tens of thousands of deaths and all the suffering they produce
--The mental health consequences of a national traumatized by gun violence (of kids watching kids in other schools get slaughtered) or of the COVID crisis
--Their efforts to strip away women's autonomy over their own bodies and the consequences of their policies

I'm a proud non-gun-owner. In fact, given the incredibly high cost to society of gun ownership, I would say I am prouder than all those proud gun-owners we hear about. In fact, two-thirds of Americans are proud non-gun-owners like me...and I'm proud of all of them too.
I've also heard a lot about responsible gun owners. While I'm all for being responsible-like being a non-gun-owner, for example-I'm also for taking responsibility. Even if you are a responsible gun owner, if you oppose tough gun controls you need to own the damage you're doing.
There is no need to own a gun in modern America. You don't need to hunt...and be honest, it's barbaric and using modern weapons against defenseless animals is obscene. And hot flash for all you militia wannabes, you're not gonna out-gun the government.

Life is too short for centrism. Life is too precious to split the difference with extremists. Compromise with evil is a victory for evil. Finding a place on the spectrum between right and left is not the answer. The goal is to understand the difference between right and wrong.
Fortunately, in the US today there's a solution that doesn't involve making concessions to the corrupt, the cynical, the ignorant or the profoundly misguided. It is majoritarianism. It is recognizing that on issue after issue, what's best for the country is what most people want.
The majority of us don't own guns, want strong gun laws, don't want people to own weapons of war, want background checks. Just like the majority support a woman's right to choose. Just like the majority support healthcare for all. Just like the majority support fairer taxes.

Yes, of course, be heartbroken. But then ask what you are going to do protect children in the future.
By all means, be angry. But then calculate how much time, money, effort you can give to vote out the Senators and Congressman whose votes and corruption are killing our children.
Certainly, condemn the corruption. But understand that while the blame for America's gun pathology lies with gun manufacturers, the gun lobby, venal immoral politicians and a sick culture, the only solution involves you doing more than you have ever done.
The death of innocent children in Texas, of good people in a supermarket in Buffalo, of mass murder victims day in and day out, should outrage and disgust you. But emotion is not enough. Finger pointing is pointless. Recognize that your inaction is the NRA's best ally.
