St. Luke’s executive VP Dennis Serrano: There are more outgoing nurses. Every day we have resignations and the resignations are not just for going abroad, there are nurses going to other careers.
Serrano: Currently, our hospitals lack a little over a hundred nurses each… we’re trying to fill that in day by day.
Serrano says some of the reasons why nurses leave are pay and opportunities abroad.
Serrano: We are trying to look at these and try to alleviate or help solve this to entice our nurses to stay with us.
Serrano: The pandemic has taken a toll on nursing graduates. There are still even fewer enrollees over the past couple of years. We are trying entice even graduates from provincial nursing schools.
Serrano: We are proud we are able to train nurses in such a way they become preferred employees abroad. That redounds to us losing a lot of these nurses.
Serrano says they have single-digit cases of COVID-19 in their hospitals.
Serrano: We’re always vigilant, we’re always prepared for any upsurge. But fortunately, we haven’t seen any and the cases we have seen are mild and asymptomatic.
