i always make that conflict element more important/pervasive in my memory than it actually is within the show because i think it’s really original??? like VERY few supernatural shows deal with the lack of consequences (other than violence) that the heroes are able to implement
because they are working within a system that doesn’t understand or recognize their reality. wesley’s argument being that they have to simply work outside the system, while angel’s is that they SHOULD be able to work within the system because isn’t it there for the same reasons?
ALSO angel saying that the system doesn’t work because the individual actors within it are bad vs. lindsey exemplifying that he *does* feel bad about what he’s doing, but the system is *built* so that he keeps doing it *despite* his personal morality. very relevant!

i love lindsey’s backstory. like he fully believes he did what he had to do and is working under exceptional circumstances but to angel it’s a cliché that doesn’t explain, let alone justify, the things he’s done. and the audience sees both perspectives and can choose the “truth”

there’s also a parallel w/ lindsey being tasked to come up with a childhood that excuses vanessa’s crimes that suggests maybe he *doesn’t* fully believe his past excuses him, or he’s flat out lying
but i think it’s more interesting to view him as a misguided idealist than a master manipulator (also why iirc i kind of believe that at some points in not fade away he genuinely did want to change)
