JUST IN: At least three people are dead after a gunman opened fire inside a private business in Smithsburg, Maryland.

The shooter was confronted by Maryland State Police after fleeing the scene, officials say.

During the confrontation, the gunman shot at and injured a trooper, who then returned fire and injured the shooter. Both were transported for medical treatment.

Authorities said that all 4 shooting victims — 3 who were killed and 1 who sustained critical injuries — at the Columbia Machine warehouse were employees.

The suspect, who used a semi-automatic handgun, was also an employee.

NEW: A Texas public safety official said today the commander on scene during the Uvalde, Texas shooting made "the wrong decision" in deciding not to breach the classrooms where the gunman had barricaded himself with students and teachers sooner.

We deleted a previous tweet describing a Texas official’s explanation of events in the Uvalde classroom where the shooter barricaded himself in.

At least two children who called 911 from inside the classroom *survived.*

Texas public safety official Steven McCraw said at least 19 officers were in a hallway outside of the classrooms when the first call from inside one of the rooms was made around 12:03 p.m.

Law enforcement didn't breach the classrooms until 12:51 p.m.
