News is circulating online that Mayor Adams has reached a handshake deal outside of public view on the city’s FY23 budget which includes the largest-ever NYPD budget -- $11.2B -- a huge boon for failed policing tactics, not so much for communities.
As we face the aftermath of the pandemic and the imminence of a recession, the mayor is proposing a budget that would flood our communities with police rather than the resources New Yorkers so desperately need during this recovery.
We are calling on city leaders to cut at least $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget and instead invest it in real public safety solutions.
In addition to the $1B in cuts for the NYPD, we are also demanding more transparency in the NYPD budget and calling for the elimination of regressive policing tactics, including ending abusive, rebranded anti-crime units.
We are also demanding putting a halt to NYPD homeless encampment sweeps and the NYPD’s mental health co-response teams, and stopping units like the NYPD Strategic Response Group and Vice Squad.
