On leadership team briefings..

At our school, the leadership team have a daily briefing at 7.50am. It’s deliberately operational, but it’s impact goes far beyond logistics.

1/11
It’s ostensibly about cover & on-call and the day’s events etc etc.. (important and thrilling stuff!😊)

But it’s a ten minute window that can make or break a day, that can inspire or derail, that can motivate or make you want to get right back in your car and drive home.

2/11
Knowing how crucial this ten minute window is for the leadership team, I decided to seek some feedback on how I run the briefings to refine and sharpen my practice.

And then I decided not to. I decided to do something else instead.

3/11
I decided to allocate each of my team a day to chair the briefing; meaning in every fortnight everyone gets one day.

What do I hope to achieve?

✅ Everyone gets a chance to step up and do what they see as a Head’s job. Empowering. Responsible. Exposing. Important.

4/11
✅ I get the chance to see how my team think it should be done… this is WAY better than asking them for feedback.. I get to SEE their IDEAL in action.

✅ We test out, as a team, our culture.. through an evaluation of our consistency in messaging.

5/11
✅ We deliberately move away from a one-directional relationship. And instead, voices we might not normally hear will hold the floor.

Not rocket science, I know! 😂
Maybe loads of SLTs do this 🤷🏻‍♀️

But it’s new for us. And it started today.

🥁 🥁 🥁

6/11
First to run the briefing was @MrR_Storey, AP & SENCO.

You guessed it. He crushed it. 💪

He inspired and motivated us, and he whipped us all into shape. One of the best briefings ever. My day was brilliant as a result because I felt galvanised and focused.

7/11
In addition to giving everyone a voice & directing the logistical information super efficiently, @MrR_Storey used his time holding the floor to reinforce some very important messages from our year so far & ask us some crucial questions. Good HARD thinking in the morning! 👇
8/11
They are @MrR_Storey’s own rough notes that he shared with us in an email afterwards. 💛

Hearing these words deeply inspired me and affected my decisions and attitude throughout the rest of the day. #impact

Talking to the team, they felt the same.

9/11
The next fortnight will be a great way to share & reflect as a team & I can’t wait to see what approach everyone will take.

That ten minute window is so impactful, it needs to be crafted and deliberate. If not, it can become meaningless & potentially be harmful.

10/11
And @lodgeparkacad we want to be conscious and deliberate about all our communication, so we can keep getting better.

And ensure everyone is valued. 👍

It matters. #LPAspirit 💛

A 🧵 of my #rEDBerks presentation on the tensions between research and practice from the PoV of an actual, tired, real-life Headteacher. @rEDBerks

My preamble: don’t be deceived - I’m pro-research, honest. I just think we need to apply criticality and hold our views lightly. 1/
Massive leaps forward as a profession. Much to celebrate. Summarised beautifully by @joe__kirby in this blog from last year pragmaticreform.wordpress.com/2021/08/28/sci…

Also, best long term bet, clear moral imperative and a move away from ‘folk teaching’. All good. 2/
But beware.. distortions, cargo cults, over reach, not value-free, slavish application.. perhaps we get a bit star struck with research & forget to exercise caution?

Does the research respect your context? Has it been tested in a similar context?

A persistent tension😬 3/

I’m excited by our big push on reading @lodgeparkacad for the Summer term. Building on the groundwork we’ve put in place for 2 years now, we’re putting reading FRONT & CENTRE 🤩

Here’s how👇

(warning: long thread, probs should have done a blog 😂)
1. The groundwork; being diligently laid since Feb 2019...

✅ Created a culture of reading for purpose & pleasure
✅ Teachers read daily
✅ Reading age tested for all
✅ 30 mins silent reading per day
✅ Big push on our chosen reading scheme
✅ High profile praise & rewards
2. We’re channeling additional covid funding into reading, in particular supporting early readers to decode and become fluent.

Using the expertise of @cherb94teaching, we’re using @RuthMiskinEdu to teach phonics to those who need it most - in all year groups.

Some reflections on the system for awarding grades this year.

▪️Highly imperfect system, but it’s what we’ve got. Let’s be pragmatic and positive.

▪️Try not to be so upset by the imperfection that you start thinking exams are perfect; they are preferable, not perfect.

1/9
▪️Don’t be fooled into thinking that loads of mocks/tests/assessments are the answer. They’re not. Great teaching is the answer.

▪️Don’t put Yr11/13 on a treadmill of tests just for the sake of ‘evidence’. Devote the time to teaching greatly 😊

2/9
▪️Don’t get hung up on comparability with other years/schools. No point right now. Focus on your students and their next few months instead.

▪️Have faith in your team. We did similar last year under crazy conditions and we did it with integrity. We’ll do it again.

THREAD: Found my grandmother’s O Level exam papers from 1954.
(kids got to keep their papers? 😮)

They’re fascinating.

Do we demand more or less of kids today?
What do the papers tell us about the curriculum in 1954?
Could you answer the questions?

Mathematics Paper 1.

2/15
Mathematics Paper 2

A thread of some stuff that is making me think hard as I make my way through @CarolynCroberts’s fantastic book 👇 1/9
I started it a few week ago and posted some initial thoughts here 👇 2/9
Consider - the concept of consent.. that parents entrust schools to share their role in developing their child. And yet, there is really no choice because the relationship between school and home is legally defined... so is it just an illusion of consent? 3/9

Many thanks to @Counsell_C and @GraceEHealy for the curriculum challenge today. Thank you also @DRETnews @educurious2015 and @emneild. Much to consider!

Here are a few questions and statements that got me thinking👇
Has compliance forced you into proxies? Do you notice when?

Is curriculum at the heart of your theory of change?

Do you / your middle leaders really understand what is meant by them curriculum is the progression model?
The final performance does not resemble the means of its nurture.
