I am very happy to be at the Negative emissions conference in Gothenburg!

Starting a mega-thread with learnings.🧵 #NegCO2
@Anders_Lyngfelt (one of the organizers) on BECCS:

- 50 million ton CO2 already stored geologically world wide (mainly for EOR)

- BECCS using chemical looping combustion is estimated to cost just €20-25/t (on existing facilities).
I like Lyngfelt and @MathiasFridahl proposal for financing CDR. Make emitters deposit funds later used for removals. Similar to carbon takeback obligations @MargrietKuijper Image
@Oliver_Geden highlighting the need for developed countries to become net negative to compensate for global overshoot or historic emissions.

Florian Kraxner led a project looking at potential for global additional forestation. Estimate 609 million ton CO2 sequestered per year, 440 million if areas are saved for biodiversity. Orders of magnitude less than other estimates for forestations potential. Image
Now Murray Moinester putting the forestation potential at 8 billion tons CO2 per year +2 billion in inorganic CO2, just on semi-arid areas. Extrapolated from Israeli results, relying on pumping fossil water. More than 16 times higher than the previous speaker..
This poster at the conference has a 2.9 billion ton/yr estimate for forestation. Image
Now at #negCO2 reception by City of Gothenburg! Image
Biochar scaling quickly @ClaudiaKammann showing that 35k ton (100k CO2) was produced 2021 and 65k ton (190k CO2) expected for 2022. ImageImage
@ClaudiaKammann also highlighted that biochar has a large potential to avoid emissions, for example from less fertilizer use, in addition to sequestrating carbon.
Now Elias Azzi explaining the new @Energi_mynd funded project on the stability of Biochar. Still a lot to be learned on the topic, really looking forward to these results at the end of the project in 2025. Image
I got super excited in 2020 by @coreyamyers paper on direct mineralization of atmospheric CO2. He has continued working on the issue and presented this excellent poster. a potentially cheap, low-tech, low-energy solution to permanently remove CO2. #negco2 Image
Switzerland has enough waste biomass to cover it's carbon removal needs for net zero! Conclusion from @brunncy study.
#negco2 Image
We don't really know how much carbon is being removed (especially in nature), or what is coming.
That's why a State of Carbon removal report is needed.
First version planned for the fall!
(Jan Minx presenting.) Image
DAC done on for example Germany's electricity grid would probably not remove any net CO2 - Mijndert van der Spek.
Large scale DAC only makes sense on a decarbonized grid..
#negCO2 Image
"I don't think DAC at $100/t is going to happen." Mijndert van der Spek.
Range $100-700/t at 1Gt scale for all DAC tech in this review.
(Based on literature, but if we can trust new companies own energy estimates the cost would be <$100) Image
Ocean alkalinity enhancement could be framed as a strategy to reduce ocean acidification, with carbon capture as a co-benefit. Rather than the other way around. - Stefano Caserini
In Germany marine CDR is basically banned. Unclear if this was the intention. Image
CDR rockstar @coreyamyers again with another exciting idea. Using desalination plants to do CDR and create products at the same time. Potentially profitable without carbon income removal! Max potential 250 Mt/yr
#negco2 Image
Angela Hepworth at Drax: We need to build the CDR market as we build our BECCs facilities. Image
@Oliver_Geden "Policymakers have already committed to net-negative CO2 by committing to net-zero GHG, but would be surprised to hear so" Image
Now a panel discussion: @Peters_Glen "We don't really know how the climate will behave at net-zero emissions, but it will have a huge impact for how much CDR is needed."
"We are going to need much more CDR than we are ever going to be able to deploy." @Peters_Glen

I bet we have a future classic quote here.
Had to leave now. Was truly wonderful to meet people IRL in the CDR community, and to get to see all the new research presented. I hope it won't be 4 years until next one!
Looking forward to seeing recordings of the last day and to be in touch with everyone over Twitter! #negco2 Image

Do countries need to care about deficits and debt in their own currency? And if not, what are the implications for economic recovery, inequality, aid, and tax avoidance? Listen to the conversation I had with @MaxJerneck about modern monetary theory.
If MMT is correct I think it can potentially make a large difference for what kind of tools there are available to fight poverty and inequality. Oxfam, where I work, has no position on MMT but it is arguably of relevance to the issues we are working with.
It would be interesting to hear thoughts as well as counterarguments on this from other people. I think it might be of relevance to: @maxlawsontin @HannnaNelson @JohanLangerock @fp2p @ScoccoSandro @arkelsten @LindgrenAsbrink @andreascervenka @drbergh @jacob_lundberg
