A GRU spy who sought to gain access to the International Criminal Court as an intern left a long and detailed trail on social media.

bellingcat.com/news/americas/…
Today, Dutch Intelligence (AIVD) said that a man named Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov had spent years building up a cover identity as a Brazilian man named “Victor Muller Ferreira” theguardian.com/law/2022/jun/1…
The AIVD said that this man had been refused entry into the Netherlands and sent back to Brazil
A press release from the AIVD provided a wide array of information, including details of his apparent “legend” identity – a fake persona created by the GRU english.aivd.nl/latest/news/20…
The details of his "legend" provided further clues about “Victor Muller Ferreira” and allowed Bellingcat (and other open source researchers) to quickly unravel his digital and real world footprint
A profile at myviasjobs says he worked as a travel agent in Brazil before attending Trinity College Dublin as an undergraduate where he studied political science (2014-18).

He then got his Master’s at Johns Hopkins’ SAIS programme (2018-20).
"Viktor" had Facebook and Twitter profiles. He also had a blog that focused on geopolitics called Politics Of US. Yet there was little on there that suggested he had any pro-Russian leanings
Interestingly, he once shared a Bellingcat article that revealed the identity of newly uncovered GRU online personas
One of "Victor's" professors at John's Hopkins has commented on his presence in his class and his feelings on discovering his apparent double identity:
Information about the true identity of the recent Johns Hopkins graduate is harder to find, but does exist in some leaked Russian databases.
It is worth noting that some of the data that was found in offline databases – such as a passport number and travel history – appears to have been manually removed from other Russian databases and data services, as is typical with security service officers.
Cherkasov is from Kaliningrad and frequently travelled between the European exclave and Moscow by train between 2005 and 2008.
The fact that these train trips are in Cherkasov’s name when he was only 20 points to this being his actual identity, rather than yet another cover persona.
While it is possible that Cherkasov was already working under a false persona at only 20 years old, it is more likely that he was assigned one later in life...
Most GRU officers that Bellingcat has studied over the years did not start working under false cover until their mid-twenties at the earliest bellingcat.com/tag/gru/
Bellingcat was also able to find flights that Cherkasov took in 2015 between Kaliningrad, Moscow and Belgorod.
More information will doubtless surface regarding Cherkasov in the weeks to come as he was not terribly secretive in his digital footprint.
For now, read our full story with further details on how we can tell data about Cherkasov was specifically moved from Russian databases and data services – as is typical with security service officers: bellingcat.com/news/americas/…

After Russia failed to take Kyiv during the first phase of its invasion of Ukraine, its focus turned east. Behind the lines in the Kharkiv Region, a motley group of militants and mercenaries is plugging the gap — and they’re not ashamed to brag about it bit.ly/3n3843P
Some of these groups are led by the Union of Donbas Volunteers (SDD), headed by state Duma representative and former "DNR" politician Alexander Borodai. They're spread out over two areas in Kharkiv oblast: one near Izyum, and another near Balakliya. Image
Members of 'Rusich', a far-right Russian mercenary group, were also seen alongside SDD fighters as well as former members of the 'Sparta' Battallion of the "DNR" armed forces. Note the runic writing and '88' on this truck: a common neo-Nazi code for 'heil Hitler'. Image

Slovenia's SDS party, under Janez Janša's leadership, lost power in April. But the media machine they built — and the far-right personalities promoted through it — isn’t going anywhere. Read @ColborneMichael's latest for @BcatMonitoring bit.ly/39txyV2
@ColborneMichael @BcatMonitoring In 2020, Janša & SDS took power in a coalition government. They were soon accused of undermining rule of law, of trying to turn Slovenia into an ‘illiberal democracy’. Janša also became famous for attacking his foes on Twitter & in SDS-linked media outlets politico.eu/article/sloven…
@ColborneMichael @BcatMonitoring Long before, Janša and SDS had already started building a right-wing media world. Alongside Demokracija, widely seen as the party magazine, in 2015 Janša announced they were creating a partisan media outlet. The following year, Nova24 went live.

Russia’s war in Ukraine has killed thousands.

But it has also caused destruction to sites of cherished cultural significance.

Bellingcat and @Newsy looked at some of the locations that have either been damaged, destroyed or are under threat. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
@Newsy Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to call into question Ukraine’s identity and statehood has raised the destruction of cultural heritage well beyond a niche issue – in fact, some Ukrainians see it as evidence of a campaign of cultural erasure. time.com/6150046/ukrain…
@Newsy Since the start of the war, Ukraine's curators and historians have busied themselves moving artefacts and works of art out of harm’s way.

New from @FoekePostma

@FoekePostma An investigation by @BcatMonitoring has found that a number of far-right online stores appear to be openly utilising the infrastructure provided by major payment processors, commercial content management systems and web domain registrars.
@FoekePostma @BcatMonitoring Bellingcat was also able to establish that far-right webstores appeared to be purchasing garments from wholesale manufacturers, whose charters celebrate diversity and equality, before embossing their own hateful messaging onto the clothing and selling it at a profit.

Since publishing our report into the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, new footage has emerged showing the moments before her shooting.
This new footage is consistent with our findings, which placed IDF vehicles ~190 meters away from the spot where Abu Akleh was shot.
A video shared on Facebook shows the line of sight from the IDF vehicle convoy to the spot where she was shot.
Two IDF vehicles are visible in the distance, just above and to the left of the yellow vehicle. On the right, the tree beside which Abu Akleh fell after she was shot.
Those same IDF vehicles are visible in one of the images that we cited in our report, which was taken from a position further south overlooking the road.
That image suggested that the IDF vehicles had a clear line of sight to the spot where Abu Akleh was shot.
