With 99.83% of the polling booths recorded in the quick count Gustavo Petro becomes the president of Colombia, beating right wing demagogue Rodolfo Hernandez. 10 quick observations:
1/ We cannot underestimate the fact that for the first time Colombia will have a president who is regarded as a Left. Others have been killed before for daring to defy the oligarchy (Gaitán, Jaramillo, etc). This is also a defeat for US imperialism.
2/ This is a defeat of uribismo and the capitalist oligarchy, linked to paramilitary gangs and narco-trafficking which have used brutal methods of sicariato (political assassination) to stay in power. When their candidate Fico was beaten in the first round they backed Rodolfo.
3/ This victory was prepared and made possible by the heroic 3-month long paro nacional (national stoppage) a year ago. It's the victory of the youth of the Primera Linea and the 100s of 1000s of workers, peasants, indigenous people and women who defied Army and police repression
4/ This is a crucial victory, but, Petro does not have a majority in parliament. The oligarchy will use all means at its disposal, parliamentary and extra parliamentary to sabotage his reforms. Media demonisation, sabotage, threats, flight of capital, etc. ...
5/ But they will also try to co-opt him, force him to moderate his program (even further), buy him off. The bourgeois and right wing elements (some from the Santos camp) he has involved in his team and campaign will play a key role of internal sabotage.
6/ Nothing will be achieved without the mass movement of workers and peasants outside parliament, to defend the government against the attacks of the right, to push it further when it vacillates. The working people can only trust their own strength.
7/ If Petro rules in favour of the workers and peasants, the majority who elected him, he will conjure the wrath of the ruling class, but will be able to rely on the movement of the masses to advance.
8/ If Petro vacillates, compromises, makes concessions under pressure, he will undermine his own base of support, demoralise those who have backed him and prepare his own removal from power. Look at the lessons of Castillo in Peru.
9/ Francia Marquez does not represent exactly the same as Petro. He is a consumate reformist, she is more plebeian and in touch with the rank and file mass movements. She could become a pole of reference for a grouping to the left of Petro.
10/ Revolutionaries celebrate the victory of Colombian working masses, but have no illusions in Petro nor his program of limited reforms. Even those can only be implemented through a program which challenges the power of imperialism and the rotten Colombian capitalist oligarchy.
And 10/ the masses came out to celebrate the victory of Gustavo Petro in the Colombian presidential election and the defeat of uribismo. An historic turning point.
11/ in his victory speech you can see the limitations of Petro and his program. "We will develop capitalism in Colombia", but capitalism is the problem, not "feudalism" as he said! And within capitalism, not even his program of limited reforms is possible.
All this time they insisted it was not a neo-Nazi sign. Now they admit it is. But, wait a second. It is not dropped because IT IS a neo-Nazi sign, but rather because it is exploited by Russian propaganda! So, what is this article about? 🧵thetimes.co.uk/article/azov-b…
1/ the article in the Times references the public unveiling of a new unit of Azov, SSO Azov Kharkiv, announced by Konstantin Nemichev, leader of the Kraken unit of Azov in his Telegram channel: t.me/natsionalKhark…
Con el 42% escrutado, Petro y Francia reciben un 40% en las presidenciales en #ColombiaDecide. El demagogo de derechas Rodolfo es segundo y el principal candidato de la oligarquía Fico queda tercero con 24%.
US imperialists in panic at the prospect of Petro's victory in today's Colombian election. US representative Salazar calls him "a thieve, a terrorist and a Marxist" and calls for Biden to intervene. #ColombiaDecide
Today's likely defeat of the capitalist oligarchy represented by Duque and Uribe in the Colombian presidential election was won by workers and youth during last year's heroic Paro Nacional #ColombiaDecidemarxist.com/colombia-natio…
1/ Today is the 20th anniversary of uprising which defeated the coup in Venezuela. Also Rodney Alvarez will walk free after spending nearly 11 years in jail accused of a crime he did not commit and for which he was never sentenced. #1eroMayoSinTrabajadoresPresos
2/ Rodney Alvarez was a trade union activist at Ferrominera, the state owned iron works in Bolivar state. On June 9, 20011, during a union assembly at the plant gates there was a shoot out and worker Renny Rojas was killed. Eyewitnesses identified Hector Maican as the gunman.
3/ Maican fled to the union offices inside the plant where he was arrested, with the gun, by the Bolivarian National Guard. The state prosecutor accused him of the killing of Renny Rojas a member of the PSUV youth. However, 2 days later Maican was released. Why?
1/ Let me tell you the story of the US attack on the Medicins Sans Frontiers Hospital in Afghanistan. On 3 October 2015, US airstrikes destroyed the MSF trauma hospital in Kunduz, killing 42 people.
2/ "On the night of the attack, there were 105 patients in the hospital and 140 of our [MSF] international and national staff were present, of whom 80 were on duty."
3/ "Starting at 2:08am on Saturday 3 October, a United States AC-130 gunship fired 211 shells on the main hospital building where patients were sleeping in their beds or being operated on in the operating theatre."
1/ In his speech recognising the Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples Republics, Putin made very clear what his thinking is: a wholly reactionary harping back to the Russian Empire. He blamed Lenin and the Bolsheviks for creating Ukraine.
2/He is not wrong about Lenin's careful national self determination policy (which led him to clash with Stalin) and the creation of the USSR with the union on equal footing of Soviet Ukraine and Soviet Russia.
3/ Western imperialists are raising a hue and cry over "territorial integrity" and "sovereignty" but Putin is just copying their own behavior, down to sending troops as "peacekeepers". US bombed, invaded, carried out coups - where was sovereignty then?
