GameFi Needs Gamers: healing the rift between web2 players and web3 builders. An #ownyoursaga thread 🧵

1. GameFi must escape the shadow of DeFi culture to truly flourish. The incentives of ROI have nothing to do with the love of gaming. Thus, the more traditional crypto culture attempts to embrace gamers, the further it pushes them away.

2. Gamers have learned to distrust the idea of predatory loot boxes, broken pay-to-win mechanics, and aggressive DLC. Rightly so. None of those interactions make games more fun.

3. Instead of feeling like participants in the games they love, more and more gamers feel like the product. Or even worse, a target.

4. Especially for MMORPGs and other multiplayer games, players ARE the value of the ecosystem. Not just their money - but their passion, creativity, and joy. People got married in games. They didn’t invest in them.

5. But they haven’t been respected. #GameFi could be the solution that tears down the “walled garden” system in which all of your creative and competitive accomplishments are separated and held hostage by individual game companies.

6. NFTs will not overrule game design. No, you won’t bring a laser gun into a fantasy game if the developers don’t want you to. Games are delicately balanced ecosystems that must be cared for with love. But YOUR saga is not bound to any one game. YOU should be free.

7. If you spent ten years running a guild for hundreds of people, or you’re one of the top players in any multiplayer game, or you’re a dedicated modder… YOU are valuable to those ecosystems and YOU deserve to retain that reputation as you move between games.

8. Gamers want GameFi - they just don’t want it to be a cheap trick buzzword used solely for game developers to milk their audience. Gamers play games in part to feel in control - and GameFi will succeed if it gives the control to players that traditional gaming fails to provide.

9. Players need to be given the opportunity to be the gardeners, not farmers, of the worlds that they love. And together, developers and their communities will revolutionize how we play, build, and socialize online.
