Today we passed two ordinances that come, at least in part, because of media attention on frustrations small business owners experienced in permitting with KCMO. Short snippet about those in the next couple of tweets. Moral of the story is that earned media is effective tool.
First, Ordinance 220535 created a new @KCMOHealthDept permit option to allow “non-mobile food vendors” to obtain a single annual permit to sell food at multiple events throughout the year. @TheFastPitch covered frustration of small biz owners two weeks ago thepitchkc.com/local-vendors-…
Second, Ordinance 220516 modernizes the antiquated liquor license density limit that Bliss Books and Wine owner La’Nesha Frazier faced when trying to obtain a liquor license at her 4th District book store. @KSHB41 reported on this in April. kshb.com/news/local-new…
Big thanks to the business owners who advocated for these changes and remained patient despite a frustrating situation. And shout out to staff for finding effective solutions. #KCMO
Worth noting that the non-mobile food vendor ordinance that I sponsored was a fairly simple fix that required a mere few hours of my time but a lot collaboration w/city staff and biz owners.
On the other hand the three liquor license ordinances that @AndreaBough spent two years working on basically overhauled chapter 10 of the city code. Congrats, Andrea for this long fought victory! I know it wasn’t easy. Thank you.
