Ok reporting back on the McCartney show in Frome last night… #PaulMcCartney

First of all no phones allowed inside 🍃 #PaulMcCartney

It can’t have been more than 400 people in that audience. We very easily got a spot front and centre. A bizarre sensation. #PaulMcCartney

There was a genuinely stunned feeling in the room like nobody could quite believe we were living the experience. #PaulMcCartney

He came onstage with a 5 piece band. Hofner bass in tow, no in ear monitors, no screens, just a rock band. Opened with ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’. #PaulMcCartney

The crowd was slow to fully engage initially, I think because it was an actual struggle for most to fully concede they were participating in reality. #PaulMcCartney

I thought he would lower the keys of the songs to help his voice out but as he cracked into ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’ he was staying strong with the OG key like a soldier. #PaulMcCartney

Blackbird on his own, Lady Madonna on piano with band and horn section. Let Me Roll It, spanking that riff on his Les Paul. It was all a bit fucking ideal. #PaulMcCartney

He told that story about Hendrix covering Sgt. Pep two days after its release, made a funny about Clapton and then dove into ‘Getting Better’. Which was when my brain mushed a little, literally hand on heart singing every word with the man who wrote it standing three metres away

The crowd and band fully locked once some ‘Ob-la-di,ob-la-da’ audience participation was called for. You could see Paul in eyes going “there you guys are thank fuck” #PaulMcCartney

Then “for the first time in the UK” he busted out the medley from the 2nd side of Abbey Road. He paused after ‘She Came in Through the Bathroom Window’ having already missed out John’s ‘Mean Mr Mustard’ and ‘Polythene Pam’, then launched into a string of hits. #PaulMcCartney

The set culminated in a ‘Get Back’ ‘Let it Be’, ‘Hey Jude’ situation. Songs for the universe, sung in a tiny venue in Somerset, bucket list is now full, we all exuded. #PaulMcCartney

He came back on and almost blithely rinsed through ‘Birthday’, the perfect encore gear shift. I lied and put my hand up when he asked if it was anyone’s birthday. He did not, and was right to do so, sing any of it in my direction. #PaulMcCartney

Then ‘Helter Skelter’, doubling down on the fuck you it’s the White Album energy. He and I did for a brief moment, sing a chorus looking into each other’s eyes. Did I subsequently cry out of every orifice? No, I held it together, like a gentleman. #PaulMcCartney

He closed proceedings with the remainder of the Abbey Road medley- starting at Golden Slumbers and going right on through to ‘The End’. It was an immaculate way to end. If these shows truly are the finale of his live career, I think he’s smashed it. #PaulMcCartney

One tiny thing though, if he doesn’t want his die hard fans whispering ‘coward’ whilst shaking an ironic fist in the air, he should play ‘Her Majesty’ before truly being allowed to leave the stage. #PaulMcCartney

An ice cream van in the rain, playing ‘When I’m Sixty Four’ after the show. Well done England, you won this round. Love you Paul. #PaulMcCartney
