Coalesce is coming to SuperRare Friday, July 1st. It’s a collection based on circle packing and simplex noise. What began as a response to a Genuary prompt slowly developed into a larger concept. This project is the culmination of several months’ efforts.
The collection is divided into styles or sets, consisting of five pieces each. They're set apart by the combination of constraints used to place the circles, giving rise to different forms. Coalesce is the name of the collection as well as the first series in the collection.
The four styles are Coalesce, Multifield, Colorshift, and Lens. A new style will be released each Friday. Additional styles may be added in the future, but no further works will be added to the current sets.
Coalesce utilizes both circles and rings to cover the plane. A scaled simplex noise field is used as a secondary constraint, yielding the banding and forms.
Each piece contains one million circles. Because of the large quantity and brute force approach, each piece took between ten and 14 hours to complete.
The works are 16,000px (square) and were minted with Manifold. Each piece is accompanied by a matching SVG and mini PNG, stored on ARDrive. The SVG is intended to help with printing or creating zoomed views of the work and the downscaled PNG is a more manageable size for sharing.
It took longer than expected but I am proud of the results. Considerable effort went into increasing the circle count, tuning diameters and render times, testing file formats and sizes, and replacing Perlin with simplex noise to remove artifacts.
If interested, please check out the collection here. The first series will go live next Friday. In the meantime, I will be discussing further details and sharing some new concepts for future work. Thank you!
