The federal "Life At Conception Act," which also has 18 Republican sponsors in the Senate, is the same as the Personhood Amendment that 58% of Mississippi voters rejected in 2011 because it was so extreme.

And yet 78% of US House Republicans support it!

JUST IN: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch has certified the state's 2007 Roe v. Wade trigger law, criminalizing nearly all abortions at all stages beginning July 7.

The state's abortion clinic has 10 days left to operate.

Under the trigger law, anyone violating providing an abortion* could face up to 10 years in prison, the same as Mississippi’s pre-Roe v. Wade abortion laws.

*Exceptions are for "preservation of the mother's life" or for rapes reported to law enforcement.

The state lawmaker who sponsored Mississippi’s 2007 trigger law, Sen. Joey Fillingane, told the Mississippi Free Press last month that he would like to introduce legislation to repeal all rape exceptions—leaving only "life of the mother" as an exception.

The people who wanted Roe overturned voted consistently Republican for 40 years to get that outcome.

When they didn't like a GOP candidate, they held their noses and voted anyway because getting a right-wing, anti-Roe majority was more important than likability.

They succeeded.
As an evangelical teen in 2008 who would be 18 by election day, I told my youth group that I didn't like John McCain as a candidate.

My youth leader told me to vote for him anyway because all that mattered is that he would put anti-abortion judges on the Supreme Court.
When I left evangelicalism and went to college (and became familiar with real Democrats/liberals/left-wingers, not caricatures), I was struck by how comparatively little emphasis there was on the Supreme Court and the connection between it and elections.

NEW: Mississippi's only abortion clinic, the Jackson Women's Health Organization, will remain open until at least July 4th.

At or soon after that point, all abortions will be illegal except to save a pregnant person's life or in rape cases.*

NEW: After 12 years spent dodging debates, U.S. House Rep. Steven Palazzo will face an opponent onstage tomorrow for the first time since winning his seat in 2010.

With his seat in jeopardy, Palazzo asked for a debate with GOP runoff opponent Mike Ezell.

Over the years, Palazzo has repeatedly ignored invitations to debate Democratic and GOP opponents alike while cruising to re-election. He skipped four GOP primary forums this year.

But after being forced into a runoff, Palazzo changed his tune.
