How to make your SEO content more LGBTQ+ inclusive this #Pride month + beyond 🌈

8 top tips you can implement today:
1/ Don’t assume the gender of your audience

For example, tampons are marketed almost solely at women

But there are other genders that menstruate, too

Make sure to include them in your copy
2/ Don’t assume the gender of people you’re referencing or quoting

Where appropriate, refer to people as ‘they’ unless you’re sure of their gender

I present as quite masculine but I’m non-binary, for example

3/ Remove unnecessarily gendered phrases

For example, marketing copy often associates gay men with femininity and lesbian women with masculinity

The reality is much more complex, so try and remove these biased associations
4/ Present different families

If you’re writing about a family-friendly product, do you always refer to a mum and dad?

There are so many different family setups out there — same sex partners, three parent families etc — that you can include too
5/ Do your research

If you do decide to use LGBTQ+ terminology or slang, do your research first

Otherwise, you could appear tone deaf and deter customers

There’s no way you can include everyone on every page you write

It’s all about taking a step back, removing your biases and switching things up when you can
7/ Own your mistakes

Everyone gets things wrong sometimes — even me — but don’t shy away from addressing it

A quick apology is all you need if you make a mistake
8/ Update old articles

Language evolves and the terms we use quickly go out of date

If you’re auditing your content, make checking for inclusivity another step on your checklist
