Trying to crystalize an idea I can't seem to shake. A 🧡:

The first sovereign machine with above-human intellect was born a decade ago, and we didn't notice.

/1
In sci-fi, AI was a necessary component of sovereign machine intelligence.

We thought that sovereign machines would need their own synthetic brains. The AI field set about building them.

In reality, blockchain networks simply co-opted our brains to work for them instead. /2
The first powerful sovereign machine intelligence was Bitcoin*.

It incentivizes people to solve a fairly uninteresting math problem.

In doing so, it ensures its sovereignty and resilience (through decentralization): nobody can turn it off, or unilaterally change its code. /3

Want to see something cool?

arweave.net/bfquwFXgNsPUhn…

This is 1 of 10,000 files (metadata for @SollamasNFT on @solana) written to the Arweave in a single base layer TX 🀯.

It cost $0.37 and synced atomically, in just a few minutes.

How? A deep dive 🧡 on storage scalability πŸ‘‡
So how can the network support this? πŸ€”

As a truly permanent storage system, Arweave has a critical property that it can employ to enable massive scalability: Nothing changes once written, so it doesn't have to keep track of any individual 'state' per transaction. 2/11
This is best understood in contrast to its alternatives.

In a typical storage network, there are storage lengths assigned hosters, individual prices, etc.

Subsequently, every transaction needs to be monitored and adjudicated separately. 3/11

This is a core question driving many of the underlying issues in society at the moment.

So what is the answer? In truth, this effect arises from a deficiency in the HTTP protocol. πŸ‘‡ /1
Cyberspace was always meant to be completely detached from the power politics of physical space.

John Perry Barlow knew this in 1996 when he articulated the 'Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace':

arweave.net/Omg9vKSZxy6zfx… /2
'Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.' /3

Arweave is a permanent, decentralised archive of history and knowledge.

Some network infrastructure in China, as well as the Arweave core developers, were under attack last month.

Signs point to these attacks originating from the Chinese government. /1

fortune.com/2020/11/05/chi…
Despite this, the Arweave network continues to operate without disruption.

As the founders of Arweave, we have one simple reminder to those responsible: you cannot take down a decentralised network. /2
Arweave’s core defence against attacks is its decentralisation.

Fortunately, the network has been fully community-operated for over 2 years, with a highly engaged and growing ecosystem around it. /3
