103.01/ Week one-hundred and three, July 2-8, 2022, thread begins here.

Week 102 below.
103.03/ #July4th is two days in chutz l'aretz, right? #Happy4th! My grill laden with hamburg...
103.04/ The recent domestic terrorist attacks in Highland Park & Philadelphia have definitely put me on edge. Davening for those communities and for God's protection for the future. As below, we can't keep going on like this.
103.05/ It me.

(I'm posting this now so my kids will understand that others share their fate)
103.06/ I used to call this the Ayn Rand rule and nowadays there's quite a number of people who fall into this simple litmus test. M*sk, Joe R*gan, etc.

103.08/ The FarLeft has mythologized FDR & LBJ's successes into a pure Green-Lantern "force of personality" fable. But those two (and Lincoln) only got so much done b/c of huge majorities in Congress! (Who else uses a mythic past to pillory the present?)
103.09/ Yes! This is the right way to do the mitzvah. Ahavta reiecha kamocha, Love your neighbor as yourself.

Pure tzedaka must is filled with compassion. That's what God wants us to do.
103.12/ This is excellent. I aspire to this level of commitment to the bit (in this case, not giving bigots satisfaction)
103.13/ Parenting achievement unlocked: Thank God, after 2.5 yrs of pandemic things are safe enough that we could my kids to summer camps that my wife & I wish we could've gone to in our day. My daughter is at Drisha Gemara camp & my son is at the boys' equivalent, Morasha Kollel
103.15/ Yes. Yes, this is it. [Singing: "my country 'tis of thee..."]

103.17/ Very true. I've witnessed it (at least implicitly) and it's utterly illogical among my cohort.
103.18/ Statistics are easier to understand when practical uses are demonstrated. Case in point:
103.19/ Great aphorism: "Sutor, ne ultra crepidam is a Latin expression meaning literally 'Shoemaker, not beyond the shoe', used to warn individuals not to pass judgment beyond their expertise"

Let's replace "stay in your lane" with something like that.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutor,_ne…
103.21/ This entire thing.

(1) you can either be actively anti-fascist or bystander/perpetrator.

(2) Support for trans-people is a cornerstone for anti-fascism right now. No excuses. It's life or death.
103.22/ Heh.

(It's a good example of how the "logic" of TERFdom and other bigotries breaks down under the slightest pressure and/or a mild curve off the rails.)

103.25/ Excellent suggestions for how to visit the sick (bikur cholim).

This alone is good (and I need to make a list)

And this is really great! Bring shareable food, for the person and their future visitors.
103.26/ Until the Roman persecutions forced our hand, there was a ban on writing down the Oral Law. Why? To save lives & avoid exploitation of Jewish culture.

We created tactics 2000+ years ago so to escape the inevitable violence from state surveillance. Just... ya know.
103.30/ Happy "Last Day of Masechet Yevamot" to all who celebrate! #DafYomi

It was nice to get a weird story of "Jonny the Demon" as a send-off. Yeah, he could just be a demon hunter, but Rashi's first answer is that he's an actual sheid. Named Jonathan.
sefaria.org/Yevamot.122a.9…
103.31/ Excellent comment & especially the line: "yeah, we’re not aliens…"

103.33/ Wow, Sulu went hard.

He endured one of the brain-breaking-est events in the past century, the internment of Japanese Americans during WW2 by FDR (of all people) & so I pay attention to his words.
103.34/ As OP upthread noted, the AP accidently included an editors note. It appears legit

103.35/ Same.

Maybe with Fresca instead.

103.36/ Show me where to sign.

[Alt text: "Pick up artists and garbage men should switch names"]

103.37/ Part of me really appreciates how the Biden administration does great things without fanfare, similar to how Barry Sanders would be superhuman, score & then just quietly hand the football to the ref. Yet in an election year they *can't* be quiet.
103.38/ Fun stuff and a special thanks for including my boy, Pluto.
103.39/ The lead-up to 2016 made this extremely clear to me.

These people are egoistical authoritarians who, because they happened to be born Jewish, must define Judaism by their own minds: selfish, shallow & brutal.
103.40/ Abrams puts it so well, and that's what I believe when I emphasize voting. Sadly, IMO the anti-voters filling my feed who accuse me of thinking it *is* magic are themselves dependent on magic solutions (keyword: bully pulpit). It's a paradigm clash
103.42/ Excellent point by @Convolutedname and a good retort to the inveterate ideological pessimists.

103.43/ I've made my #ChochmatNashim ("Parsha Torah by Orthodox Women") entries into its own thread. See below:
103.46/ I've long felt a kinship with ducks - animals that can adequately do everything - walk, fly, and swim - just not very well.

Ducks of all trades, master of none.

But I have newer admiration for them seeing how they goof out TIGERS. My heroes.
103.47/ This is great news, I believe. It was scary to contemplate having a brittle colonialist be in charge of the preferred communication medium of academics, journalists and many marginalized communities.

nytimes.com/2022/07/08/tec…
103.48/ I will end the thread-blog on some good news. Two of my kids are away at camp, so it will be a bit lonely, but they are having a great time, thank God.

Stay safe everyone and #ShabbatShalom

195.03/ #Eclipse2024 My extended family went to a place of 100% totality and took this picture a few minutes ago. For me its 90% and can't be photographed (which is one reason I said shehechiyanu). Not paskening for anyone else, but for me this is a religious experience. The total eclipse of April 8, 2024

191.03/ I agree with Prof. Simkovich, re: the Oscar guy.

Also, I see people wrestling to make sense of his convoluted phrasing, but I'm not inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to a declaration that inherently refuses to give others the same benefit.
