I spoke today with a long-time Ukrainian soldier & contact who's been in Donbas since 2014; he's now in a leadership role. He was wounded by 82mm mortar days ago & hospitalized. 2 pieces of shrapnel remain stuck in him. He confirmed Ukrainian forces are suffering huge casualties.
Three weeks ago, he had 60 soldiers in his unit north of Popasna. Today he has 20; 40 have been KIA or WIA; 3 KIA last week. They were nearly caught in the kettle as Russian forces captured Severo & Lysychansk; they've been pushed 30+ miles east from their original positions.
They haven't gotten any new Western weapons or ammo & rely on Ukraine's Soviet-era stockpile which is running dangerously low. But there's been some success — they shot down a Russian Ka-52 with an Igla 2 weeks ago. But another returned to shoot up their position the next day.
He said Russian tanks & artillery are the biggest problems facing them; the number of tanks & artillery barrages hitting them is crazy & the amount of Western aid being given right now is not going to be enough to turn the tide in Ukraine's favor. "We need more, more, more."
He said morale is falling and the loss of Luhansk Oblast has been demoralizing. His company has been at the frontline in the Donbas since well before Feb. 24 and not had a break. Only the wounded get a break, he said.

British citizens Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, and Moroccan national Saadoun Brahim, all of whom fought on contract with Ukraine’s military, have been sentenced to death by the Kremlin’s puppet authorities in Donetsk in show trial that lasted mere days. They were not mercenaries.
I met Aslin near Mariupol in January. We stayed in touch as long as was possible before he was captured by Russian forces. He had reupped his Ukraine military contract for a 4th year. As soldiers he & others must be protected by Geneva conventions on POWs. buzzfeednews.com/article/christ…
British foreign secretary on the "convictions" of Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner:
Kyiv awoke to ~5 Russian missiles strikes at 5am. Mayor Klitschko said they hit on the left bank near Darnytsia railway station and Pozniaky. This is the first attack on Kyiv in weeks. It was eerily silent this morn, save for the birds. Then came the explosions in the distance.
There may have been more missiles aimed at Kyiv. The Kyiv Regional Military Administration says one “enemy missile was shot down over Obukhiv district by air defense forces.” That suggests the missiles came from the south.
Kyiv City State Administration says, so far, no serious casualties from the strike; one person was hospitalized. Emergency services are still working on site.
We traveled across the Donbas, in ambulances and military vehicles, to witness daring rescues and evacuations, as well as the aftermath of Russian airstrikes and artillery attacks. The war in eastern Ukraine is a living hell. politico.com/news/2022/06/0… via @politico
There're many brave volunteers like Mark Holtsyev who are risking life & limb to save desperate people caught in the Russian army's path. Every one is a hero. Holtsyev drove us toward Lyman in his ambulance where he, police, & troops were helping folks escape. 📸 @AnatoliiStepan4
Some outtakes, if you will, from my latest visit to the Donbas. Here’s Oleksiy, 38, from Donetsk city, showing us his Italian and Polish munitions at a position near Izyum. He’s quite pleased with their range and ability.
Ukrainian jets zipping over the Donbas on their way back from attacking Russian positions.
A bit of what it’s like moving around out in the east. This was between artillery volleys.
After suffering humiliating defeats, Russia's making slow progress as it employs a scorched-earth campaign in east Ukraine. But Kyiv hopes momentum will change in its favor with arrival of NATO weapons.
We spent time with Ukrainian mechanized brigades, territorial defense forces, police, others. I've covered the war in the Donbas since day 1; in 8 years I've never seen the situation so intense & terrible. Ukrainians are taking heavy losses, up to 100 a day. Russians, too. My 📸
In the wide expanse of Ukraine’s eastern steppe, heavy weapons are the defining feature of the new phase of Russia’s war. It’s mostly a long-range shootout across gullies, hills, and rivers. Those with biggest and most guns will likely win. Russia has the upper hand right now.
Ukraine media buzz for you: Interfax UA announced a presser tomo in Kyiv with Marina Ovsyannikova, ex Russia Channel 1 producer, who's supposed to expose how Ru propaganda works. Many ppl aren't happy. Already, comments where it's meant to stream are 🌶️.
And now, various people at Interfax UA say the press conference is cancelled, and not cancelled, and we'll call you back tomorrow to update you. Hard to see this going forward, IMO.
YouTube page where the event was/is meant to be streamed now looks like this:
