TW: Mass Shooting

We were there. Right there.

We live in Highland Park, IL and today we were in the middle of a murderous attack.

I had to pull my infant child to safety as people were dead and dying around us.

I got separated from my wife when she carried my 6 yo to safety

It should have been us.

It was close enough to touch.

It was where we were 30 minutes earlier.

It was all around us.

We are at friends’ house because the shooter is still at large.

There are no words to describe the abject sorrow and unimaginable horror we witnessed, mere inches away.

Our nation has failed us. We have failed our children.

This must stop.

This culture of death continues to consume people, and there’s no end in sight.

We are lucky because we are all uninjured and we’re finally reunited.

Our story is not anomalous. It is the bloody reality of too many of us.

I am relatively invisible on this site and I don’t even know why I’m saying any of this.

Maybe I just want to scream into the void.

Maybe I just want to turn my anger into a small step toward action.

But my life is changed forever. My wife and 6 yr lives are changed forever

Today people are still celebrating “Independence Day.”

Fuck that independence if it means the facilitation of these murders.

For the sake of our children, of our future, we must stand against this tyranny of death.
