GOP leadership aide bragging to NBC News about “taking [their] foot off the gas” on cultural issues in order to win elections. To be clear, running on “Trump” in generals might not be helpful, but when they say Trump and abortion, they mean the culture war in general.
Principles aside, it’s dumb politics. Look at Youngkin. Want to win suburban moms? Maybe don’t take your foot off the gas. Dem candidate supports abortion up to birth? Might want to mention it.
This is exactly what they said about immigration and LGBT issues in 2012, which enabled the problems we’re dealing with now at the border and with extreme trans ideology. As @InezFeltscher says, the culture war is the big tent. Talk to @Schilling1776 about his research.
The word you’re looking for is not defusing. It’s ignoring.

Nothing to see here, just the exalted former head of WaPo telling CSPAN about the time he colluded with a CIA agent to steal the diary of another CIA agent’s ex-wife (and JFK mistress) after her murder… while he was DC bureau chief at Newsweek.
If you watched White House Plumbers, this is what Hunt references when he mentions what was done to Cord Meyer’s wife. It gets even crazier when you consider 1) Meyer oversaw the Ellsberg break in after the Pentagon Papers, 2) Bradlee oversaw the publishing of the Pentagon Papers, and 3) Hunt fingered Meyer in the Kennedy assassination, at least according to his son
The film determined to hit reopened theaters first is eerily well-suited to the moment at hand. It's literally called "Unhinged."
Producer Mark Gill tells me that was "an accident of timing." The midsize thriller could say a lot about Hollywood's future. thefederalist.com/2020/08/05/set…
Gill, a former Miramax exec., describes himself as "a recovering employee of Harvey Weinstein."
Now, Hollywood is "a lot better,” he told me. “Almost everybody I ever worked for was a serial screamer, so this is quite a nice change."
Here's his take on how Harvey got away with it.
Mistreatment and exploitation of employees had been normalized in Hollywood.
Far left activists behind the protests believe capitalism and social justice are fundamentally incompatible. Their movement is being boosted by media, Hollywood, and corporations. Make no mistake: elites in Hollywood, media, and Wall St have no interest in dismantling capitalism
A movie star grabs headlines for issuing their statement of support (because the media profits off the clicks) for the movement, creating publicity, and helping them rake in more millions from the box office and corporate endorsements
Cultural progressivism has been co-opted by capitalists, and its supporters are unwittingly applauding the people who use it to further the capitalist system they theoretically deplore
In addition to fueling relapses, isolation is also pushing people towards addiction who haven't struggled with it before, Ryan said. "So what’s happening is people need purpose, they need connection, they need fellowship. Now they’re all alone."
Alcohol and fentanyl abuse are spiking, according to Ryan. But many rehab facilities are struggling with the financial and medical circumstances, he explained. "A lot of the state-funded programs or free programs just don’t have the financial backing."
After rescinding the Obama admin guidelines in 2017, Betsy DeVos issued new Title IX rules this morning, set to go into effect on Aug. 14. Senior department official called it "a historic day for the country and the Trump administration." www2.ed.gov/about/offices/…
DeVos anticipates criticism, but encourages press to read the plain text of the rule, which any "objective" analyses will show "meaningfully addresses sexual misconduct and treats all students fairly."
"I'm a mother and a grandmother of girls and of boys," DeVos emphasizes.
