At last night's #Bristol Full Council meeting I spoke in opposition to a motion entitled "Trans Rights are Human Rights". Although there was a lot in there that I agreed with, I could not support the blanket statement that "Trans man are men, trans women are women"
I argued that trans and non-binary people are entitled (like everyone else) to our love, compassion and support, but that biological sex and gender identity are two distinct things, and that both matter in different circumstances.
A blanket declaration that "trans men are men, trans women are women" risks ignoring the role of biology and undermining the important sex-based rights that people (mostly women) fought for over many years.
I was also concerned that the motion sought a one-sided approach to education on gender issues. These can be difficult conversations, but I think our children are capable of hearing more than one side of a debate.
The motion was passed by Council. Congratulations to @andrewbrownld who introduced it. You can watch the debate at (my speech at 2:52:09)
