This past week, many of my family members were able to travel to Israel (on personal time and dime) and visit @yadvashem, the World Holocaust Center in Jerusalem.
This trip was deeply personal, and I'd like to share it with you and tell you a bit more about my family's story🧵
This is a photo I've never shared before.
In this scrapbook, you'll see my dad, grandparents and their Polish marriage certificate dated 1940.
I was fortunate enough to get to know my grandmother before she passed, but my grandfather, Karol, was murdered during the Holocaust.
In one post-war letter, a family friend described his death as too terrible to put into writing.
My family survived in part because of the grace of one person in particular, Father Jozef Czapran. A Catholic priest, he put himself at great personal risk by helping my family forge papers to hide their Jewish identity so my dad, just a toddler at the time, could survive.
It was an honor to be present as Father Jozef Czapran was posthumously recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. This designation is given to those who helped families like mine during the war.
The media likes to cover the fighting and partisanship that takes place in Washington. They won’t tell you about the times we cooperate on behalf of the American people.
Here are a few of the dozen bipartisan bills we passed in the last week you might have missed! 🧵
.@JerryMoran’s Colonel John M. McHugh Tuition Fairness for Survivors Act of 2021, which would reduce the out-of-pocket education costs for surviving spouses and children of servicemembers, passed the house with support of both parties.
.@SenDuckworth’s Protecting Moms Who Served Act, which would ensure mothers who served receive quality care from the VA, passed by a vote of 419-9.
THREAD: Over the past few days, my attention has been drawn, sadly, to the new allegation that our President threatened a foreign leader by denying military assistance in order to obtain information that would discredit a political opponent. /1
If this is true, this marks a sad, new chapter for our country. This is a matter of national security, and we must find the truth. /2
I’m also concerned about a whistleblower complaint against the President that the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community says is both "urgent and credible." /3
C. auris is part of a "rise of drug-resistant infections" across the globe. Already, experts have said that "unless more effective new medicines are developed and unnecessary use of antimicrobial drugs is sharply curbed, risk will spread to healthier populations." 2/
A study conducted by the British government projects that, unless we take action now, "10 million people could die worldwide of all such infections in 2050, eclipsing the eight million expected to die that year from cancer." 3/
