On Wednesday, the European Parliament backed rules set out by the EU that will label investments in gas and nuclear energy as ‘green’ starting in 2023.
An attempt was made to block the proposal, but approx half of the lawmakers present opposed the motion. It’s likely that these rules will become law, as 20 out of 28 members are needed to vote against it to oppose it.
The European Commission stated that although it recognizes the environmental risks of these energy sources, they are a key part of Europe’s transition towards achieving climate neutrality.
Although nuclear energy does not directly produce carbon dioxide emissions, it produces radioactive waste which can be difficult to dispose of. Countries such as France, that are backing nuclear energy, claim it is a crucial part of meeting emission-cutting goals.
Gas does produce harmful emissions, but it is considered less polluting than coal, making it a temporary alternative for some EU states.

The proposal has received criticism from many climate activists, celebrities, and campaigners.
Greenpeace and WWF have called out the EU for its greenwashing and announced plans to litigate. Several activists and celebrities have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts, using the hashtag #NotMyTaxonomy.

New York state will now ask individuals seeking a permit to carry concealed handguns to submit a list of their social media accounts. Those social accounts will then be screened to assess the applicant’s ‘character and conduct.’ Image
The requirement, which was included in a law Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul signed last week, is aimed at preserving some restrictions on weapons following a recent SCOTUS ruling striking down NY’s long-standing concealed carry law.
The requirement will take effect in September, obligating applicants to give local authorities a list of their active and inactive social media accounts from the past three years.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was sued in 2020 for its plan to kill up to 72 grizzly bears near Yellowstone National Park to make room for livestock. That lawsuit was dismissed in May 2022, opening the door for the USFWS to carry on with its plan. Image
On July 7, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club filed an appeal in an attempt to stop the USFWS again.
‘We’re determined to stop this terrible plan, which could be a death sentence for dozens of Yellowstone grizzly bears,’ said Andrea Zaccardi, the Center for Biological Diversity’s carnivore conservation legal director.

On July 7, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced that California will begin producing its own insulin to reduce the price of insulin treatment for those with diabetes. Insulin-related costs can typically run thousands of dollars each year. Image
‘Nothing epitomizes market failures more than the cost of insulin,’ said Newsom. ‘Many Americans experience out-of-pocket costs anywhere from $300 to $500 per month for this lifesaving drug. California is now taking matters into our own hands.’
This endeavor will reportedly make California the first state to produce its own drugs.

Climate activism group Extinction Rebellion put out a statement on July 7 responding to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation announcement. Image
The group said, in part, that citizens must not be distracted by ‘the endless stupidity of the last few years,’ but instead concentrate on assembling to get rid of ‘politics as usual’ & form a ‘more participatory mode of politics’ that will reflect the ‘diversity of our society.’
'While we might feel apathy from the endless stupidity of the last few years, we must not be distracted by it. Because the work to dismantle democracy and destroy the future of humanity is working over time behind the scenes...'
