🚨🚨🚨 Last night, the PA Senate waived their rule about voting after 11pm. What they did next is outrageous and you may find it hard to believe. A thread 🧵 /1
Anti-abortion politicians had been pushing SB956, a bill that would put to voters a ballot question about banning the right to an abortion and state funding for an abortion in the state Constitution. /2
But last night, SB956 was amended into SB106. SB106 would still ask Pennsylvanians to vote on banning abortion in the commonwealth as a Constitutional amendment. But there’s more. A lot more. /3
SB106 would also:
❌ Institute voter ID
❌ Centralize election oversight to a single state official
❌ Weaken the power of the governor and shift that power to the legislature
❌ Make the Lt. Gov an appointed, not elected, position
/4
SB106 is an unprecedented attempt to fundamentally amend the PA Constitution, literally at the 11th hour. It’s undemocratic and it’s dangerous. /5
So what can you do? If you’re in or around Harrisburg, you can attend a rally at noon today at the state capitol. If you can’t make it to the rally, you can contact your legislator and demand that they vote “No” on SB106. legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/h… /6
SB106 is a real threat to our democracy. It won’t be the last one, either. We must stay vigilant to protect our civil rights and liberties in these difficult times. Thanks for all you do to stay in the fight. 7/7

You’ve probably heard about Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay Law,” a law intended to stoke the culture war by banning certain books and conversations from schools. Two PA senators have just introduced legislation that would go further than Florida. 🧵 /1
SB1277 and SB1278 would create a hostile school environment that would prevent students from being their full, authentic selves, sow distrust between students and teachers, and make productive and inclusive learning all but impossible. /2
SB1278 would ban any discussion or acknowledgment of gender identity or sexual orientation until the sixth grade, creating a false equivalence between these topics and formal sex education. /3
Today, the US Supreme Court reversed 50 years of precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade. Here’s what that means for abortion care in Pennsylvania. 🧵 /1
Important: abortion is still legal in Pennsylvania, and today’s decision doesn’t immediately impact the right to an abortion in the commonwealth. But it soon could. Here’s how. /2
As long as Pennsylvania has a governor that supports the right to abortion care, any legislation limiting abortion access will likely be vetoed. Voters will decide the next governor in November. /3
For at least the third time since Labor Day, police in Pennsylvania have shot people of color who were in the midst of a mental health crisis.
On Sept 13, a police officer in Lancaster shot and killed Ricardo Muñoz, a Latinx man in crisis. And police in Reading shot and wounded Roxanne Moore, a Black transgender woman.
On Monday, police in Philadelphia shot and killed Walter Wallace, Jr., a Black man in crisis.
In Lancaster and Philadelphia, family members of the victim were on the scene attempting to de-escalate their loved ones. Rather than solving the problem, police made it far, far worse, which led to tragedies.
