Important to note that case data is hugely undercounting this surge. COVID testing has slowed and shifted to unreported antigen tests. Plots like below can mislead because the current surge looks so much lower than January. But #wastewater data reveals the true levels. (1/4)
In this example from San Francisco, the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is in blue, and publicly reported cases in red. The red curve might lead you to conclude cases are much lower than in January, but the wastewater values are as high or *higher* than back then! (2/4)
Testing practices changed drastically during this time period, but people still go to the bathroom. Plotting positivity also supports the conclusion that wastewater is giving the more consistent picture of disease levels - there is a close match between ww and positivity. (3/4)
Many people look to case numbers to form opinions on risk, but wastewater can actually provide a better reflection of the COVID-19 cases than PCR testing data. This is one example from San Francisco, but we're seeing the same thing across the country. Stay safe out there! (4/4)
